A RAMBLING IN LISTRY
ABOVE: RIGHT: YOUNG and old, beginners and experienced all became one for a fantastic rambling house at Listry Community Centre recently.
The old Kerry tradition of rambling in to visit the neighbours and have the craic was the chief inspiration for the Saturday night’s event, and Amanda Howe, secretary of the Milltown-Listry Comhaltas branch who co-hosted the event with Listry Community Council, said the night was one of great opportunity for the young musicians who took part. “We’ve a great group of young musicians who meet every Sunday to practice together,” Amanda explained.
“This was a great opportunity to play to an audience along with adult musicians.”
And a great audience there was – it was a true rambling house with people who rambled in from all over the Kingdom. With a great programme set out for the night, many from the floor also offered to take part on the night.
This event is one that keeps traditional music ticking over as the branch prepare to host the County Fleadh for a second successive year next June in Milltown, which Chairman of the Milltown-Listry Comhaltas Turlough O’Brien says is something of great excitement for the musicians.
“Last year’s fleadh was fantastic. We look forward to welcoming the county’s musicians back for a celebration of trad next year again, and, in the meantime, we can host events like this while fostering the development of our younger musicians,” Turlough said.
The night of tunes, songs, story, dance and refreshments went into the early hours of Saturday night and it definitely set the tone for all future events held.
