Handed Down remembers the Late Dan Murphy of Fáilte Bar
HANDED Down, the Scartaglin based, monthly dip into the culture and music of the area will take a trip down memory lane on Saturday night.
One of traditional music’s leading exponents, Donal Murphy will tell the story of his boxplayer father, the late Dan Murphy from Knocknagoshel and late of The Fáilte Bar in Abbeyfeale.
Dan Murphy and his UK born wife, Maureen Cleary returned to Ireland from Birmingham and bought the bar in Abbeyfeale in 1976
Immediately it became a centre for Irish Traditional Music gigs and sessions.
“The impact that this era had on the music of West Limerick is a great story and will be presented by his son the acclaimed boxplayer Donal Murphy who has reached fame all over the world,” said Handed Down founder member, PJ Teahan.
“We have a special guest, Eoin Stan O Sullivan to speak about his role as Sliabh Luachra Musician in Residence for Cork, Kerry and Limerick county councils.
“We also have a list of top class guest musicians including: Maura O’Connor, Abbeyfeale; Lisa and Tosh O’Sullivan from Freemount; actor and singer, John Walsh, Scartaglin,” said PJ.
The Handed Down tradition of including the young musicians of the area will bring Caoimhe Murphy and Lauren O’Connor, Keeva O’Donnell, Emma and Marie Flynn to the Scartaglin Heritage Centre stage on Saturday night from 8pm sharp.
