Campfires, hiking, life skills at Sneem County Scout Camp
SNEEM village was a hive of activity last weekend as scout groups from across Kerry descended on the village for a weekend camp which went down a treat with all those who attended.
Telling stories at a camp fire, hiking and learning resuscitation skills were just some of the activities the scouts took part in.
The South Kerry village hosted what is believed to be one of the largest gatherings of scouts in one place and of all different age groups.
The Sneem Scout camp, organised by the 15th Kerry Sneem Group, was held in conjunction with the annual Sneem Storytelling festival.
The Sneem group was formed last year and has 62 youth members aged from 6 -15 years of age.
They were joined by groups from across Kerry including the 1st Kerry Tralee, 2nd Kerry Tralee, 3rd Kerry Milltown, 6th Kerry Killarney, 8th Kerry Fossa, 14th Kerry Killorglin and 30th Kerry Firies scout groups and these included members of all ages.
There was over 200 scouts and over 40 adult scouting volunteers at the camp.
Scout leader, Alan Davies, said the weekend was a huge success and he said he was grateful to all those who helped bring the event together.
“We had huge support from the community and the families of our youth members in setting this up,” he added.
Much of the weekend centred around the storytelling festival and the scouts also enjoyed a large outdoor camp fire where they sat around on nearly 200 borrowed pallets and sang songs and told tales.
Some of the older groups camped out with campsites set out around the village while the younger groups came on a day trip.
The Order of Malta also attended the camp and spent the day giving demonstrations of medical treatments.
