Scotts Lakers Killarney 99 Waterford Vikings 80

KILLARNEY’S Scotts Lakers encountered little difficulty disposing of the challenge of Waterford Vikings in Killarney Sports Centre on Saturday night. It was a match that lacked excitement and intensity and while the young Waterford team battled bravely at times, they were no match for a far superior Killarney side.

0 Noe and Ryan Pepper did help the visitors to a 8-6 lead midway through the first half but their advantage was short-lived. Scotts Lakers stamped their authority with Papito Hersisia, Mark Greene and Sean O’Brien all hitting big scores and the home side led 33-23 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lakers maintained control to lead 44-25 after three minutes of the second quarter. Justin Tuason and Seamus Brosnan made notable contributions upon their introductions with Brosnan beating the buzzer at the close of the half to give the home side a 59-38 advantage.

There appeared to be no way back for the Vikings at this stage and with Hersisia, O’Brien and Mason impressing, Lakers enjoyed their largest lead of the night, 79-53, with four minutes remaining in the third quarter.

It was 87-62 entering the final period but it took the home side a full five minutes to score again. Waterford’s young players Dale Kavanagh and Daniel Sheehan impressed as the Vikings outscored the Lakers 18-12 in the closing period.

In the end Scotts Lakers had a comfortable 19 points to spare despite a lacklustre performance overall. It could easily have been a higher margin and maybe in games like this, the Lakers should use the opportunity to increase their scoring difference on the league table.

League leaders Ballincollig inflicted a 36-point hammering on the cellar dwellers on Sunday leaving the Waterford side still searching for their first win after 11 outings.

Ballincollig lead the southern conference with an 11-0 record while Scotts Lakers, who have played one game less, remain in second place with a 8-2 record.
