Resurfacing one of worst stretches of road in the country
IT is hoped major resurfacing works will take place on the N86 at Gleann na nGealt near Camp village early in the new year.
The stretch of road has been described as having one of the worst surfaces of any national road in Ireland, despite being very busy with traffic between the county’s largest town, Tralee, and one of Kerry’s tourism hotbeds, Dingle.
The Kerryman understands the funding will be about €350,000, but this – and the length of time the works will take – will be confirmed after the tendering process.
It follows major roadworks as part of the N86 Improvement Scheme – in Lios Póil, and between Ballygarret and Camp – which were carried out at a cost of some €8million. The official opening of these took place yesterday at Garraí na dTor, Lios Póil.
Minister Brendan Griffin said he was delighted that resurfacing will now take place at Gleann na nGealt in the coming weeks and explained that it follows extensive lobbying with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
“They can’t come quickly enough,” he said of the resurfacing project.
“This is by far one of the worst sections of national road in Kerry.
“At one stage, I even made a video showing how poor the condition of the surface at Gleann na Gealt is and sent it directly to the CEO of TII Michael Nolan.
“The road is exceptionally poor on this stretch, which is very busy with people travelling between Dingle and Tralee.
“When this work is completed, it will greatly complement the three sections of the N86.
“I want to see the next phases of the overall upgrade project progressing in 2019, with Ballynasare to Annascaul and Doonore to Ballygarret next in line.”
