Killarney come up short in Fermoy

MUNSTER JUNIOR PLATE

Fermoy 40 Killarney 13

KILLARNEY found Cork side Fermoy too hot to handle and exited the Munster Junior Plate, although the away side did give a spirited account of themselves on the day. Fermoy operate in the second tier of Munster Junior rugby and the gap in the divisions proved too much for the gallant Killarney side.

Fermoy set out their stall early in the game and after a period of dominance Eoin Tracey struck for a try. Killarney didn’t let this set back deter them and with their forwards beginning to get to grips with their opponents, they soon struck for a try of their own.

Some excellent carries from the pack eventually opened up a gap and Ger Moynihan crashed over the whitewash for a superb try which Oisin O’Shea converted to push them 7-5 ahead. Fermoy struck back almost immediately with a try from Dylan Foley which was converted by Tracey to put the home side into a 12-7 lead at the half-time break.

O’Shea added a penalty early in the second half to bring Killarney to within two points, but Fermoy responded with a converted try from Eoin Tracey. The game firmly swung in Fermoy’s favour after this, and despite some brave cover defending from Killarney, the home side began to open up some serious gaps in their rearguard.

Three more tries followed from Tom Murphy, Peter Skuse and Frankie Flynn to leave them firmly in control. Oisin O’Shea responded with a penalty for Killarney, but it mattered little as Fermoy emerged as deserved winners.
