Killarney 17 Cashel/Kilfeacle 10

PLAYING into a strong wind Killarney tested the visiting defence early on but some hard tackling kept them at bay.

The home side continued to dominate, but soon the tide began to turn with Cashel’s Munster Academy out half Stephen Ferncombe beginning to stamp his authority on the game.

The away side took a 3-0 lead and pressurised Killarney’s defence. A crucial moment arrived shortly before half-time when ever alert Thomas Clifford snaffled a loose ball from a ruck on the left touch line and caught the defence flat-footed, racing away to touch down.

The half time score of a very even contest was 5-3 to the home team.

Killarney used the wind to their advantage in the second half and their half back partnership of Peter Walsh and Donnachadh Greally began to impose themselves on proceedings.

The breakthrough that they craved came in the 52nd minute following some several good phases and carries, before full-back Liam Randles entered the line at pace to cutback and sidestep over in the left corner. Peter Walsh nailed the touch line conversion to stretch their lead to 12-3.

Cashel / Kilfeacle rallied but excellent tackling from Dan Twomey, Thomas Clifford and Jack Kenneally kept them at bay. Misfortune was to strike for Killarney when John McCarthy and Tommy Clifford were sin binned and with the home side down to 13 players, Cashel’Kilfeacle camped themselves inside their 22’.

Their pressure eventually paid off when Ferncombe found a gap to touchdown, and he converted to bring the score to 12-10. Killarney needed a response and once again Randles struck for his second try with was a carbon copy of his first effort.

The final whistle sounded soon afterwards, and Killarney finished as deserved winners.
