WINDOW ON THE PAST

In late 1957 Soviet Russia launched two satellites into space and the word ‘Sputnik’ entered the dictionary for the first time. Somebody in Tarmons decided Sputniks would make a good name for the team then being launched to contest the Parish League. The team colours would be red and green and the training pitch would be in Kennedy’s field in Dooncaha. Michael Stack who played on the team wrote a song about the ‘great football, the likes never seen, played around the furze bushes in Kennedy’s Cudeen ‘. The Sputniks went on to beat a fancied Town side in the Parish League final of 1958. The team lined out as follows - Sonny Sweeney, Frank Guerin, Bill Ryan, Bernie Weir, Billie McDonnell, ‘Jackson’Moore, Ned Mulvihill, Billy Buckley, John Joe Moore, Sean Ahern, Tommy Heffernan, John Joe Heffernan, Paddy Horan, Michael Stack and Sonny Mulvihill.

The last verse of the song, a little tongue in cheek, went as follows -’So now to our trainers who put us in line/ Mossy Joe, Paddy Barrett and the great Paddy Ryan/ they played some great football in the great Kerry Team and now they are trainers in Kennedy’s Cudeen’. Sé mo thuairim nach bhfuil ach triúr den foireann beo ar an saol anois ‘ full back Frank Guerin, his likes never seen, quick for to score Sean Ahern and the stylish Din Joe ‘. Nil mé chinnte faoi ‘Sonny Sweeney, in goals just a boy of eighteen ‘ An bhfuil sé beo nó marbh ? who died recently in Perth, Scotland. He is survived by his wife, Breeda, son John, daughters Michelle and Geraldine, grandchildren, brothers and sister. The funeral took place in Perth. Go dtuga Dia suaimhneas síoraí dá anam.
