Some class acts lined up for St John’s over the coming month
FROM traditional Irish music to the traditional music of the Appalachian settlers, films, plays and classical concerts - there’s something for everyone as always at St John’s this month.
One of Irelands greatest and most popular singer songwriters, Seán Keane made a spectacular return to town as he kicked off the year with a very special concert last Friday night.
Traditional Irish, folk and even country and blues songs all lend themselves to his unique style and unforgettable voice. Growing up in a family of singers and musicians, Seán learned the Sean-Nós style of singing from his mother and his aunts.
Derry actors Bronagh Gallagher and Lola Pettigrew are the stars of the January Film Club, on Thursday, January 16, when Bump Along the Way screens.
It’s described as ‘a charming, warm Irish crowd-pleaser tale of a boozy 44-year-old single mother who becomes pregnant from a one-nightstand, much to the shame of her buttoned-up teen daughter’.
Cherish the Ladies 35th anniversary concert takes place on Sunday, January 19. It’s a great line-up of traditional musical talent with Joanie Madden on flute, whistles and vocals; Mary Coogan on guitar; Nollaig Casey on fiddle; Kathleen Boyle on piano, harmony vocals; Kate Purcell on vocals and guitar; step-dancer David Geaney; and Seámus O’Flatharta on vocals, harp and step dance.
“These ladies (and gents!) will create an evening that includes a spectacular blend of virtuoso instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements, and stunning step dancing,” a spokesperson said.
Monday to Wednesday, January 20 to 22, will see the Theatrix Stage School deliver their production of Lord of the Flies - based on the classic William Golding novel of young boys attempting to create a society on the desert island where they find themselves marooned without adult company.
Thursday, January 23, meanwhile sees Seth Mulder and Midnight Run rock the joing. Originating in the Gateway of the Great Smoky Mountains, Seth Mulder & Midnight Run is a high-energy bluegrass band tied to the rich traditions of bluegrass music and offers up a fresh approach to the “High Lonesome” sound.
The Cork-based Vanbrugh Quartet hit town on Wednesday, January 29.
Regarded as Ireland’s most distinguished string quartet, they are set to perform Brahms Piano quintet in C minor and Schubert’s “Trout” quintet among other treats for lovers of classical music. 7.40pm is the time to be there for all listings.
