The Kerryman (North Kerry)

Former Kerry man employee Joe will be sadly missed

- The Late Joe Galvin, Tralee

THE death has occurred of Michael Joseph (Joe) Galvin, Knockmoyle, Tralee, and formerly of The Square, Tralee.

Joe was born on March 25, 1924, to Michael and Julia Galvin of The Square, Tralee.

He had three sisters: Doris (deceased), Irene (deceased) and Mary. He grew up in The Square and went to school in Tralee CBS, The Green. He had a keen interest in music, and as a teenager he joined the ‘Jimmy Rohan Band’, with whom he played drums and enjoyed playing at many different dances throughout Kerry.

Following in his own father’s footsteps, Joe became a very good golfer and continued to play right into his 90th year. He was a founder member of the Seniors Golf in Barrow Golf Club, along with his great friends Willie Benner (Deceased), Paddy McGillicuddy, and Willie and Mixie Palmer.

In the 1950s, Joe met Mary Lynch from Castle Street, Tralee, who became the love of his life and his driving force. They were married in 1958 and had three children: Les, Trish and Mike. They made their family home in Knockmoyle and were happily married for over 60 years. Sadly, Mary pre-deceased him in April 2019, and he missed her terribly.

Joe spent his entire working life as an employee of The Kerryman, and he retired in 1983.

He enjoyed his retirement by buying an apartment in Spain, where he and Mary spent time enjoying the Costa del Sol and the company of their many friends they met there down through the years.

Joe and Mary had many friends, which included a special, life-long friendship with Gerald and Dolla Webster.

He was a proud family man and loved spending time with his family, relatives and his many friends. He always spoke fondly of the O’Gradys in Galway, the Lynes in Killarney and the McCarthys in Lixnaw.

Along with his love for family and travel, he was a sports enthusiast and had a great passion for Munster rugby and Manchester United. But golf was his number-one sport, and right up to his sad passing he would maintain a keen interest in every tournament.

He will be missed terribly by all his family: Les, Trish, Mike, Ashley, David, Avril, Mark, Conor, Effie, Mary, Ciaran, Billy and by his many relatives and friends.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
