Heartbroken Brosnan left to lament missed chance as IT head for play-off

- BY JIMMY D’ARCY

IT Tralee Joint Manager Liam Brosnan was obviously gutted with the way events played out in Austin Stack Park.

“To be honest with you, the dressing room inside is probably the worst dressing room I was ever in,” he said straight up.

“It was hugely disappointing but look, it’s Sigerson football, and I was trying to get through to the boys, it’s very different football to what you play day in and day out during the year. It’s about who wants it most.

“You don’t have to be the best team or play the best football in the country, but you’ve got to give it 110% and I think Carlow probably did get the little 50/50 balls. Now, we had chances, we missed a lot. Guys that we thought would put the ball over the bar and do the simple things, they just wouldn’t go our way today.

“We actually went up six points, but it was just mistakes after that, taking balls into corners, being dispossessed...things that you would be trying to coach fellas.

If you are a defender coming out with a ball, don’t get turned over. Don’t go into a corner.

“We just seemed to do those things. Now, on the flip side of it, we have put in an awful lot of work, but we are missing an awful lot of players. Today was probably this team’s first time playing together. That doesn’t help, but we are very disappointed.

“With the calibre of player that we had, we were hoping to push on and get into next week, but look, obviously not. That’s the name of the game, you have to win. I thought the referee today confused a lot of us but, look, you can be giving out about referees, we still had chances that we individually should have taken, whether defensive mistakes or up front.

“We’re out next week and we’ll watch the video. It won’t be nice watching, but that’s Sigerson. That’s the hassle and the harrying and those Carlow boys that came down today, they have a lot of county players as well.

“It’s whoever shows up on the day and you have got top take your chances.”
