Griffin captains Irish win

-

BALLYMACELLIGOTT’S Ciara Griffin captained the Irish women to an impressive 18-14 victory over Scotland in the first game of the 6 Nations Championship at Energia Park last Sunday. Tries from Cliodhna Moloney, Sene Naoupu, and a second half breakaway touch down from Beibhinn Parsons laid the foundations for the Irish win.

Griffin played a major role in Naoupu’s 14th minute try with her surge for the line opening up the field for the centre to do the damage. Griffin was withdrawn at half time due to illness and her leadership was missed in the frantic second half. Griffin is expected to be fit to play against Wales next Sunday when Ireland welcome them to Energia Park for a 1pm kick off. The Welsh surprisingly lost to Italy by 19-15 in their first round match and will be desperate to make amends. Ireland should have too much in the tank for them though and a second victory is anticipated.

A 9th minute try from captain Johnny Sexton was the difference as Ireland struggled to a 19-12 victory over a determined Scotland outfit at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday. Sexton also kicked a conversion and three penalties as CJ Stander emerged with the man of the match award. The game will be remembered for a massive error from Scotland’s Stuart Hogg as he dropped the ball and butchered a certain try. Ireland welcome Wales to the Aviva stadium next Saturday for a 2.15pm throw in. Wales hammered the hapless Italians in round one and look to be in formidable form.
