The Kerryman (North Kerry)

All-Ireland Scór title is music to Finuge’s ears

- Jack Hennessy

THERE was All-Ireland glory for Scor in the Kingdom as the curtain came down on Scor na nOg activities for 2019/20 with Finuge’s Instrumental Music group bringing All-Ireland gold to north Kerry.

A busy season of Scór activity that started back in December at District Board level came to a conclusion last Saturday at the packed INEC in Killarney where the enthusiasm for clubs nationwide was evident with a magnificent display of club colours from the four corners of the country and competitors from all four provinces were represented in the winners enclosure at the end of the day.

The success story that is Scór in Kerry continued with the county represented in three out of the eight disciplines and following an evening of extremely competitive and quality talented performances.

Finuge’s Instrumental Music line up of Caoimhe Laide, Kieran MacKessy, Mikey Fealy, Aideen Cronin, Kyra O Sullivan and Daibhin Laide, who was always willing when called upon, represented their club at District Board level in early December, then annexed the Kerry title at Glenbeigh followed by a first ever Munster Scor title and appearance in January ast in Ovens, Cork.

Their hard work and dedication culminated in being crowned national Scor champions last weekend to end a memorable journey.

Finuge had to perform at their very best to get over strong opposition from Mayo, Wexford and Tyrone as they became the third Kerry club to enter the roll of honour list as national winners of Ceol Uirlise after Ballydonoghue (1998 & 2012) and Lixnaw (2015).

There were great scenes of jubilation from their many supporters and especially from Finuge’s Scor officer Verona Mackessy, Tutors Donna McElligott and Neilus Mackessy, as each member of the group came forward to receive their medal and cup from Uachtaran, CLG John Horan.

Bonfires and a large gathering of club members greeted the All-Ireland Scor champions as they returned to Finuge on Saturday night where club chairman former All Star and All-Ireland senior football medal holder Eamon Breen and club secretary Bridget Liston warmly congratulated the new historic club champions on their tremendous achievements in bringing glory to the local Community.

Kerry were also represented in two other disciplines at the final with the Glenflesk Ballad Group striving to bring the first National Title in this discipline to the County but on this occasion despite the musicians receiving fantastic rapture from the audience they were not the adjudicators’ choice this time around.

Spa were the Kerry representatives in the Quiz and even though the club holds two national titles in this category they failed to add to their list of achievements. However, both clubs acquitted themselves well and the experience gained will prove a worthwhile exercise in the future.

On behalf of Coiste Scor Chiarrai we would like to thank everybody who made this special day a huge success and also we would like to wish Tom Herlihy one of our committee members a speedy recovery.
