Colleges Final in 1977 was one of many highlights for Gerald in Colleges and Vocational Schools Competitions. He came to live in Causeway in 1974 and immediately got involved with the Hurling Club and other community organisations. He played many significant roles in the club throughout the following decades as club officer, selector, team trainer and wherever he was needed both on and off the field. The achievement of the club in winning the Senior County Hurling Championship in 1979 after a lapse of 47 years and going on to complete four-in-row was celebrated and cherished by Gerald among many other onfield successes at all age levels.
Gerald was also deeply involved, throughout, with the North Kerry Hurling Board and the County Board. Among the many positions he held were: North Kerry Hurling Board Chairman & Secretary and Vice-Chairman & Secretary of the Kerry County Board. Of course, he was an integral part of the back-room personnel for the county hurling teams, which he also trained at different times. He also held different leadership positions at national level in the administration of school=92s hurling and football competitions. Gerald was passionate about hurling and he effected many changes and initiatives which improved the status and standard of hurling in the County.
Above all, Gerald was a great mentor to many young players at school, in the parish and beyond. He was continually actively encouraging young players to persist with the game irrespective of their hurling abilities and his dedication and passion inspired many to reach the highest standards. At his removal and funeral many players, past and present, recalled the inspiration and the support which Gerald unselfishly provided.
Gerald was blessed with very good ability and great analytical skills. He was caring and kind and a wonderful husband and father. Causeway GAA club offers
