Causeway Oskars campaign holding special bingo night

-

CAUSEWAY goes to the Oskars on Friday, March 6, in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel, where short films made entirely by locals drawn from iconic favourites will be screened – all in aid of the village’s plans to buy the old Shannon Ballroom.

But there’s big pre- Oskars excitement in Causeway too, as the cast of one of the films – Oliver – hosts a special bingo event in The Forge Bar.

The bingo takes place in the bar on Sunday, March 1, from 2pm to 5pm, and it will see all the proceeds going towards the overall fund to purchase the famous ballroom. Causeway Community Action Group is driving the campaign, which plans to obtain the ballroom and transform the now dilapidated building into a vibrant community centre to serve Causeway long into the future. All the cast of Oliver, who filmed their piece on Sunday, call on everyone to come and play bingo on March 1.

SIXTY-FOUR years after she left Lixnaw at the tender age of 16, and Mary Ann Doonan (née O’Connell) will lead the St Patrick’s Day Parade as Grand Marshal in her adopted home of Greater Bridgeport, Connecticut.

It marks a moment of deep pride for the Kerry woman, her entire family and, indeed, the Irish-American community of the state, where Mary has long been a key figure and organiser of the Gaelic American Club.

It was through the club she met her husband, Peter Doonan. She married Peter in 1965, and they have four children.

The St Patrick’s parade will not be Mary Ann’s only turn in the spotlight as she is set to play a key role in the local Puerto Rican and Columbus Day parades and more.
