Trump’s critics have a duty to do better and not edit out his words

-

SIR,

President Trump’s State of the Union address contained an outstanding defence of religious freedom and the sanctity of human life in the womb.

Critics have a duty to do better than edit this out, or take highlights of his speech from the biased media.

An aspect of this is the damage done to democracy in Ireland by the award of huge salaries to some of its people, salaries amounting in some instances to twice that of the US president.

Where was the revolt against the abuse of the licence fee when those contracts were signed? There was none. We decided by default that it was alright to mix up news with entertainment, and journalism with celebrity and the quest for ratings.

What did we get as a consequence? The death of discourse, the removal of people who had the courage to tell the truth, and the projection of elite life-styles and values.

President Trump enjoys massive support in Ireland for his decision to use an alternative media. And he enjoys massive support for slashing away at the thicket of regulations and managerial tripwires which trammelled small business.

I don’t know if the success of Doonbeg is replicated thousands of times across his own country, but we have enough systems to fix here in Ireland.

The upheavals we witness in history are often fronted by unlikely prophets. And if President Trump’s critics want to drag Mr Hitler into all of this, then let them pin that label where it belongs, Sincerely,

Gerald O’Carroll,
