A tribute to the Ladies of Scartaglen GAA Club on their 30th anniversary

-

SIR,

Scartaglen Ladies Football Club celebrated their 30th anniversary last year. This is a poem I composed to mark the occasion, which I would like to share with your readers. 1989 was the year we set sail, On a journey unknown as to how we’d prevail,

But we rose to the occasion and gave it a lash,

And thirty years on, we’re back for a bash.

Time flies, they say, when you’re having fun,

And the ladies of Scart have had a great run,

They have swept the boards in places far and near,

The maroon and white have certainly had a mighty good year.

Some great men and women have been involved with the club, But that’s only half of the story, For it’s the ladies who togged out and won their games,

That brought joy and the ultimate glory.

For all who follow the local team,

We have had great days some of the best we have seen,

We have enjoyed joyful times and some of sorrow,

So let’s enjoy tonight and don’t think about tomorrow.

Let’s salute players, officials and coaches and all,

Who have given of their time and answered the call,

You have all done us proud of that there’s no doubt,

So take a bow all and give a great shout.

On occasions like this we must surely recall,

Players from Cordal and other places who gave of their all,

Your loyalty and dedication is there to be seen,

And it’s always a pleasure to have you on our team.

So here’s to Scart Ladies and let’s all raise a toast,

We’ve lasted 30 years so maybe we should boast,

The club has done mighty and that’s for sure,

And all going well more successes will ensure.

So to hell with Brexit, bad weather and taxation,

Let’s be merry tonight and enjoy the celebration,

And in 30 years time, when some of us are here no more,

Let’s hope Scart Ladies Football Club are still to the fore. Sincerely,

John Galvin, Scartaglen
