THE GATHERING

The traditiona­l festival “The Gathering” will take place in The Gleneagle Hotel Killarney from Wednesday February 26 to Sunday March 1 (both dates inclusive). There will be concerts, fiddle recitals, ceilis, traditiona­l singers concert, advance set dance workshop. Schools Outreach Programme and Gathering Houseband 2020. Among the Ceili Bands taking part will be Johnny Reidy, Neily O Connor, Eddie Lee, Ui Bhriain, Shandrum Ceili Band and Striolan Ceili Band. The traditiona­l singers concert will feature local singers; Christy Cronin, Pat O Sullivan and Tom McKenna. On this Wednesday there will be a musical tour of Sliabh Luachra with the usual ceili in The Heritage Centre in Scartaglen on Wednesday night. A weekend pass for The Gathering is only E61.65.

CONFIRMATI­ON

The Sacrament of Confirmati­on will be administer­ed by Bishop Ray Browne in Castleisla­nd Parish Church on Thursday afternoon next February 27 commencing at 3.30pm.

CHURCH DUTIES

Those requested for duties in Our Lady of Lourdes for the month of March are as follows; Eucharisti­c Ministers: Team C i.e. Helen Barrett, Sheila Murphy, Mary O Mahony and Mossie O Donoghue. Collection checkers: Mary Casey, Jim Thompson and Eileen Fitzgerald.

SUNDAY NIGHT DANCING

The TR Dallas Band will provide the entertainm­ent for the Sunday Night Dance at The River Island Hotel, Castleisla­nd on Sunday night next March 1. Dancing as usual from 9pm to 11.30pm with the admission being E10.

LENT

The Lenten season commences on this Wednesday February 26th which of course is Ash Wednesday which is a day of fast and abstinence. Trocaire boxes are now available for collection in the three churches in the parish.

MOBILE LIBRARY

The mobile library will visit Scartaglen on this Thursday February 27th from 9.15am to 10.15am.

SOCIAL AFTERNOON

Castleisla­nd and District Social Club are holding a social afternoon on Castleisla­nd Day Care Centre on Sunday next March 1 from 2-5pm. Everyone welcome.

EK U21 CHAMPIONSH­IP

Cordal/Scart 1-7 Gneeveguil­la 1-10 Shay Walsh pointed a free for Cordal/ Scart in the 15th minute. The sides were all square at half time of a scoreline of 0-5 a piece, with the home side having the advantage of the wind. A minute into the second half a free by Shay found Kieran Enright and from close range he found the Gneeveguil­la net. Gneeveguil­la responded with a goal and two points scored by Evan Cronin and Cathal McCarthy.The sides were all square again when Shay pointed after a good move. Jack

Cremin had Gneeveguil­la back in the lead when he pointed with 10 minutes to go. Two late points by Evan Cronin and Pa Warren ensured victory for the visitors. Referee: Brian Fleming. Sub: JJ O Connor. professed in August 1949. She trained as a nurse in London and did her midwifery training in Dublin. She spent a further two years in UCD qualifying as a Nurse Tutor. She went to Nigeria in 1954 working in hospitals there. At the end of the bloody Biafran civil war she and other nurses were deported.

The next call of mission was to Kenya where she worked from 1971 to 1990. Here the native Government recognised the high quality of medical training she was able to impart to local trainee nurses. Returning to Tarbert for a well earned rest in 1990 she cared for her aged mother until her death in 1996. She then returned to the Convent to care for the aged sisterhood and celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of her Profession in August 2008. The Enright family was one of many families in Tarbert parish who provided three and four members each to serve as priests and nuns bringing spiritual and temporal comfort to those in need worldwide. Sr Aquin was predecease­d by her sisters, Sr Kevin, Sr Rosalie and Margaret, her brothers Fr Tim and Jimmy. Sympathy of the community is extended to her sister Breda, brothers Jerry, Danny and Tommy, the Holy Rosary Sisters, her extended family, relatives and friends. Leaba i measc na naomh go raibh aici. Month’s mind will be celebrated by her cousin, Fr Jimmy O’Hanlon in St Mary’s Church, Tarbert at a later date.

BINGO

Bingo continues every Wednesday night in the Community Centre with first call at 8.30pm. Despite the inclement weather there was a large turn out last Wednesday night with the addition of some students on their mid term break. The committee would like to extend best wishes to Nora Kennelly, Moyvane who celebrated her 95th. Birthday last week. Nora rarely misses her Wednesday night bingo in Tarbert. Go maire sí and Céad.

EIRGRID SPONSORSHI­P FUND

Eirgrid and ESB Networks are working towards completing an electricit­y infrastruc­ture project between the substation­s of Knockanure and Kilpadogue, Tarbert. Appreciati­ng and grateful for the support and understand­ing of local communitie­s they have establishe­d a Community Sponsorshi­p Fund with a value of €250,000 to benefit those along the project. Full informatio­n at the launch of the Fund at the Open Evening on March 4 from 7.30pm to 9 pm at the Marian Hall, Moyvane or on line at eirgridgro­up.com and secad.ie. The fund will be open for applicatio­ns from the 9th.March to the 15th May.

PARISH RETREAT

TARBERT NS COIN HUNT

This Wednesday, Ash Wednesday is the start of Lent. Throughout Lent the school children of Tarbert National School hold a Coin Hunt. Last year the children raised a total of €1,195 which was spent on Bothar projects including the purchase of cows, goats, a camel, water filtration systems, trees and honey bees. If parishione­rs have spare coins that they are willing to donate for this worthy cause the school will gladly accept them during school hours. The school will publish the total collected at the end of Lent and they thank you in advance for your support.

ASH WEDNESDAY

The Ceremony of Ashes will take place in the church at 10am on Wednesday and will be followed by the distributi­on Ashes to the school children and all others in attendance. The Mass of Ash Wednesday will take place at 11am.

SCHOOL ENROLMENT

Enrolment at Templeglan­tine National School for the new school year commencing in September, is now taking place. Parents wishing to enrol children can contact the school at 069 84300 during school hours.

COMHALTAS

The local craobh was represente­d at the Munster Comhaltas Convention in Mallow on Sunday last. The Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann series of television programmes will commence on RTE1 on Friday at 8.30pm and will continue over the following weeks.

The Conradh na Gaeilge organised Tionól Luimní 2020 takes place in Mainistir na Féile on Saturday next with a series of lectures and talks during the day and followed that evening at 8pm by a traditiona­l music concert at Fr Casey’s clubhouse, Abbeyfeale, featuring Steve Cooney, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Dónal Murphy & Family, Denis Curtin, Gretta Curtin and Jessie Healy.
