ABBEYDORNEY JUBILEE TEAM - JUNIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONS 1994 : In 1994 it had had been 20 years since the club had had any real success. When the Junior team reached the county final it’s fair to say there was a lot of buzz around the game. Abbeydorney came up against Lixnaw in what was described in the paper as “terrible conditions” in Ballyheigue, with surface water in many areas of what was one of the best pitches in the county back then. Lixnaw had the wind at their backs in the first half and the score at the break was 7 points to no score. There wouldn’t have been many fingernails left after the first few minutes of the second half either, as Lixnaw found the net to go 10 points in front. However, the men in Black and Amber replied immediately, opening their account with a goal from Dan Leary from a 21-yard free. Immediately, they added a second goal when Timmy Weir blasted the ball into the roof of the net, and swinging the momentum in Abbeydorney’s favour. Donal Shanahan who was just off a plane from America, was having a major impact on the game at this stage after coming on at half time. With 15 minutes to go there was just one point between the sides and they finally drew level thanks to a pointed free from Liam O’Sullivan, who then put Abbeydorney in front with another. O’Dorney then went on to hammer home their advantage running out the winners on a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-7, an historical victory for the club. Man of the Match went to Liam O’Sullivan who scored 7 points and the cup was accepted by captain James Fealy. 1. Jim Lawlor 2. A close camaraderie was built between the teams, over the years and the Bannermen also made return trips to Asdee. The games were usually played in the Sliss Field and this went on until well into the 30s. The first North Kerry League was established in 1919 with Faha entering a team which included a number of Asdee players including Jack Boyle, Maurice Wren, Sean Coughlan and Garret Boyle. The emergence of the Black and Tans, the tragic Civil War and general political strife that followed brought football to a standstill throughout Kerry for a few years.
