Helping families keep in touch
A KIND-HEARTED and generous initiative by three Rathmore children will help the elderly in nursing homes to keep in contact with their families.
Alex (12), Neil (10) and Karl (8) have been busy in recent days refurbishing phones, laptops and iPads to deliver to care facilities in Killarney for patients who may not have access to technology to stay in contact with their loved one.
“They clear the data and load the refurbished equipment with Skype and Zoom and other similar Apps,” explained their Mom, Una Moynihan.
“They decided to donate some of their own IT to the homes and from that they began an appeal for phones and any other space technology that people have lying around and it just went from there.”
After updating the devices with everything that users may need they, along with their parents Una and Gar, deliver them to those in need.
To date they have dropped off devices to Tralee Community Nursing Unit, to residential homes in Killarney, including to St Columbanus, as well as to St Joseph’s in Rathmore and Our Lady of Lourdes in Kilcummin.
They have all been delighted to receive the devices – most requests have been for Mass links so those who can’t go out can still attend Mass in a virtual format.
The three brothers who are students of Holy Family National School in Rathmore are delighted to play a part in helping the elderly during the crisis.
“This then gives them a focus at the moment. They were busy with football and basketball and they wanted to think of something to do now.”
