The Kerryman (North Kerry)

Turning your hand to something new in times of crisis

- BY SINEAD KELLEHER

THE first batch of SkelligSix18 gin brewed in the heart of South Kerry flew off the shelves just a few months ago.

Now, the distillery is also turning its focus to the production of one of the most important items of the current pandemic – hand sanitiser – in a bid to help play a part in the current crisis.

This hand sanitiser produced in Cahersiveen has been delivered for free to front-line staff in the locality.

Staff at Cahersiveen Hospital and Valentia Hospital as – well as local Gardai, Ambulance personnel and care staff at Cúnamh Iveragh – have all received hand sanitiser courtesy of the local company. “There are very real concerns about clusters in residential settings and so it’s vitally important to do our bit to support the front line workers, our own friends and family members who are minding our own vulnerable people here,” said Norma O’Shea of SkelligSix18.

While alcohol is the main ingredient, sourcing other ingredients and bottles on global markets continues to be a challenge for anyone in Ireland making hand sanitiser, as those elements need to be imported. But SkelligSix18 has come around these difficulties by collaborating with other local businesses in the Skellig coast region such as Ballinskelligs Veterinary products, Conlon Designs, and O’Connor printing to produce this much-needed product.

They have even added their own special touch to the product with an image of the yarrow plant on the label of the hand sanitiser. It is an old Irish medicinal herb, and was traditionally worn by Kerry people in their clothing to bring them good luck.

The local community can also purchase the hand sanitiser at the distillery or online. It’s fully licensed and complies with World Health Organisation Guidelines. It is now available at the distillery – for sale at a cost price of €10 – which is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am-2pm or online at www. skelligsix18distillery. ie.
