‘Gally’s Gallop’ in aid of cancer organisations

- By STEPHEN FERNANE

IF you happen to see Eoghan Galvin pounding the roads around Tralee over the next few weeks be sure to offer some support.

Better still, go one better and donate to the GoFundMe page he has set up to raise money for two fantastic organisations: Kerry Cancer Support Group and the Palliative Care Unit in University Hospital Kerry.

Eoghan (or Gally’s Gallop) plans to walk/run 200km during May in memory of his late mother, Anne, who died of cancer in 2016.

“I’m trying to run most of it and then take a couple of days off by walking to allow the body to recover, it’s about building up the kilometres. I just throw on a few tunes and away I go around town,” Eoghan said.

Eoghan’s determination to raise funds is very much influenced by the great care his mother received from cancer support services in Kerry.

“I’ve been thinking about doing it for a while and since the pandemic I’ve had a bit of time on my hands, so there’s never been a better time.

The support and generosity that I’ve received from people so far has been amazing,” he added.

“These organisations have had to double their services in recent times and because of the pandemic, there’s been a halt to public fundraising that they would normally rely on.

“Any money raised for these charities is always very much appreciated,” he said.

“It’s tough stacking up the kilometres but when you realise what the people who travel on the bus to Cork for cancer treatment are going though, and their families, it puts it in perspective,” he added.

Eoghan started out on his campaign on May 3, and to date he has already raised in excess of €10,000.

“I can’t get over the response and it’s nice to remember my mother in this way.

“As someone said to me recently, the organisations I’m raising money for are great to have but bad to want. People only have good things to say about them,” Eoghan concluded.

You can donate to ‘Gally’s Gallop’ on the GoFundMe page.
