CANONMICHAEL FLEMINGRIP

There was widespread shock and sadness in Scartaglen, Killorglin and the county in general on Friday morning of last week when news filtered through that Canon Michael Fleming had died unexpectedly. The late Canon Michael was ordained in 1971 and was due to celebrate his Golden Jubilee next year. He had been Parish Priest of Killorglin for the past 17 years. The late Michael served as Administrator in Killarney for some years and served in many parishes in the diocese including Dingle, Waterville, Tralee, Glenflesk and Moyvane. He was also stationed in Wembley in England for a period of time.

The deceased was a pretty good footballer in his younger days and played with Scartaglen teams at all levels over the years. He was a very proud Scartaglen and Kerry man. He was a keen golfer and a staunch Kerry GAA supporter. He was pre-deceased by his parents Nora and Patrick.

The late Canon Michael is survived by his sisters Mai Fleming (Killarney), Sr. De Lourdes (Tralee), Sr. Angela (Clonakility) and Eileen Carew (Tipperary) and by his brother Patrick in New Jersey, USA. Burial took place in the church grounds of St. James’ Church, Killorglin on Tuesday last. May he Rest In Peace.

Invitations have been sent out to fiddlers in the UK, USA, Holland, France as well as to several counties in Ireland to participate and there has been a huge response.

SLÍNAMBEAGLAOICH

If you are sick and tired of all the media coverage being given to Covid-19 why not tune into “Slí na mBeaglaoích” on TG4 on Sunday nights at 9.30pm. This programme is about Breandán and Cormac Begley (father and son) travelling in a Camper Van from West Kerry to Donegal and playing lots of traditional music on the way as well as meeting other musicians, singers and dancers on their journey from county to county. Breandán and Cormac are members of the famous Begley family from Baile na bPoc who are all renowned traditional musicians and singers so this programme is a nice diversion and distraction from all the news concerning the present pandemic. It’s entertaining with a bit of craic and if you’re a fan of trad, you will like it. The programme is repeated on Friday night at 9.15pm on TG4. If you have missed an episode or two already, you can catch up by going to TG4 Player.

MONTHOFMAY

We are into the merry month of May which is indeed one of the nicest months of the year as Mother Nature bursts into full bloom. Along woodland trails there are bluebells, cowslips, buttercups and a host of other flowers can be seen. The cuckoo can be heard and the black and white thorn trees and gorse are in full bloom. In a normal year (and this year of 2020 is far from being normal) people would be looking forward to the Rally of The Lakes, The Killarney Races, The Kingdom County Fair, football matches and in the Munster Championship and local events such as World Fiddle Day in Scartaglen, Ice Cream Sunday and the annual Open Air mass in Kilsarcon Cemetery and the above are only some of the events which would be in progress in the county this month. Now everything this May is different and to quote the immortal words of W.B. Yeats “All is changed, changed utterly”.

Both were very popular locally and Rosemary participated in the activities of the local branch of the I.C.A and was always available to help in any local community cause. After the death of her husband George, Rosemary went to live with her daughter Valerie in Killarney.

Rosemary’s remains were removed to Portarlington for interment with her late husband George. Sympathy of the community is extended to her daughter Valerie (Hilliard) and son Peter, extended family, neighbours and friends.

SPLIT THE BUCKET

Once again sincere thanks to everyone who helped to make the fundraiser a success. They especially thank the local businesses who participated. With the current pandemic, the Parents Association have decided to discontinue the fundraiser until normal routine resumes at the National School. They wish good health and safety to all.

RE-OPENING

Patrons will be delighted to know that the Mochi Chinese Restaurant, Church Street, Tarbert which has been closed for the past four or five weeks due to the Covid-19 crisis will be re-opening this Thursday 14 May. From Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday next they will be open for Take Away service only from 4.30pm to 10.30 pm on these days.

WALKING IN TARBERT

It was welcome news to learn that from 5 May the extension on movement has been increased from 2km to 5km which means that the local amenity walks are now open to everybody including those of us over 70 who were cocooning. We are very fortunate to have these lovely walks on our doorstep especially when we can take advantage of the beautiful fine weather such as we have been enjoying for the past couple of weeks.

The walk to Tarbert Island is the most popular of these walks. Children accompanied by adults can enjoy all that the Fairy Trail has to offer. This walk in the wood was originally known as the Captain’s Walk in deference to Captain Robert Leslie (1825-1914) and his favourite walk which leads to the Island road exit. In Tarbert Island one can sit and watch the coming and going of the Shannon ferry.

Another walk for the more active and fitter is the steep Back of the Hill road, originally known as the Avenue road because it was in the days of ‘the coach and pair’ the main entrance road to Tarbert House, the home of the Leslie family. At the top of this road on the boreen leading into Langan’s house there are fine views of Tarbert island and Moneypoint directly in view across the estuary right down to Scattery Island and its round Tower.

One can opt for a return walk through Leslie’s wood following the arrow directions on to Joy’s lane and the exit on to the Island road. Here all the native trees, bluebells and wild garlic are in view and one can enjoy to constant sound of bird song. This walk can also be accessed at the first entrance on the Island road and following Joy’s lane through the wood, exiting on to the Avenue road and return to the village.

At all times follow the advice to keep at least 2 metres (6 feet) away from other people, avoid physical contact, wash your hands, stay safe and enjoy the walks. by her family and all who knew her. A private family funeral mass, in accordance with HSE guidelines, was celebrated in Templeglantine Church on Tuesday with burial taking place afterwards in Reilig na Tríonóide. Kitty is survived by her daughters Mary and Catherine, sons-in-law Mike Keating and Mike Jones, grandchildren, nephews and nieces and other relatives. Go dtuga Dia suaimhneas síoraí dá hanam

Among those remembered in prayer at the weekend mass were the late Helen Stack, Gurteen, whose 3rd anniversary occurs and Kitty Daly, Berna who was laid to rest during the week. Beannacht Dé ar anamacha na marbh.

Prayers and Eucharistic Adoration continue in Templeglantine Church on Wednesday evenings 7-8pm with rosary at 7.30pm going out live on Facebook and on the church radio system.

COMHALTAS

Normally at this time of year our Comhaltas members would be looking forward to Fleadh Cheoil Luimnigh but this year there is a huge void with the Co Fleadh unable to be held due to Covid-19. People will have great memories of the wonderful atmosphere at Fleadh 2019 in Athea and hoping that it will be back there again in 2021. For the past ten years our local Comhaltas craobh has organised a Campa Samhraidh at Halla Inse Bhán where the Aos Óg enjoyed a week of Ceol, Rince, Amhránaíocht agus sport, but regretfully this year it cannot take place. In the absence of the local music classes young musicians are encouraged go on line to obtain new tunes at www.sctexams. com.
