CHURCH NOTICES

A Notice on the Diocesan website states that “Parishes in the County have been invited to consider the possibility of opening their churches for personal prayer only”. This will be done in consultation with the Pastoral Area. Opening of the churches depends on the implementation of health and safety measures, in keeping with all guidelines from the Public Health Authorities. All Parishes in the County will need to prepare their churches and make arrangements for daily cleaning etc, so time will be required to put all these measures in place. Each parish is free to decide as to when to open their churches for personal prayer, but not prior to this Wednesday 20th of May. When the Churches will re open, everybody in our parishes are asked and instructed to adjust to this new situation calmly and carefully. We are all advised that the safest way to visit a church during this present time is to either walk around, stand and pray, but don’t sit down and don’t touch anything in the church, everybody is asked to practice and observe the social distancing guidelines. Please continue to observe 100% all Public Health restrictions and guidance. Please, do not become complacent. The continuation of the decision of the Diocese of Kerry is that no public Masses will be celebrated until further notice. However Private masses will continue to be celebrated by Rev. Fr Michael Hussey P.P. with the situation being reviewed continuously. WATCH MASS ON T.V. Parishioners are reminded that if they wish they can watch daily on television, it is on the R.T.E. NEWS channel beginning at 10.30am each morning. You can also stream Mass live on the internet from the various Churches in the Diocese of Kerry such as Killarney, Tralee, Causeway, Ballyduff, Listowel, Moyvane and Dingle. Just log onto www.dioceseofkerry.ie and you will find a full list of churches in the County streamlining mass.

GAA PITCH CLOSED

Please Note that following a directive from Croke Park, the O’Rahilly G.A.A. pitch/walkpath is presently closed to the public. Please adhere to the guidelines. There is no known date for re-opening but hopefully it will be in the very near future.

DISGUSTING

Sad to relate that we still have people in society who generally have no respect for No 1. Themselves, No.2 Their Community and No. 3 the well being of the people of this community whom may I add are all very cautious and dreading this Covid 19 epidemic as is everybody else. Indeed in these strange times isn’t it marvellous that we have the privilege of having such wonderful amenities in which we can walk to, one of those areas being Carrig and particularly in around the Island along the shoreline to the Battery and take in the breath taking sights without being in breach of the Virus restrictions. Now imagine the disgust, disappointment and fury of a regular walker to these parts who early last week came across discarded cans, bottles and general refuse which had been dumped along this stretch of walkway where so many visit at various times of the day for a bit of fresh air and exercise. How in the name of God can people be so inconsiderate, going around and dumping refuse of any kind in areas where our residents go for a leisurely walk and some exercise and avoiding the treat of catching this dreaded virus.

The culprits of this most recent cowardly act are not helping much in trying to eliminate any treat of ill health are they? The culprits should be ashamed this day and age and especially considering the times we all live in.

MEMORY LANE

As referred to in last week’s notes, this week we venture something of a light hearted and entertaining note to keep everybody upbeat and hopefully get people’s memories working during these stressful times, here we take a trip down memory’s lane for everybody that can remember the various businesses that operated in Bally during the 60’s and 70’s. Over these four weeks we will try to put together all the various business premises that operated in our thriving village in those marvellous times of 50 years ago, and compare them with present day operations. In the coming week’s we will visit one of the four streets and mention the names of the shops etc that were part of everyday life in Bally.

A number of years ago, Con Hanlon, Pat Lynch, Michael O’ Connor and I drew up a map showing all of the various business premises in the village, but unfortunately we never published it. However hope this will bring back happy memories to all that remember Bally in those years. First up is: Bridge Street. This street at that time could be classed as the hub of the business area of the village with a huge volume of small shops and Bars all doing exceptionally well.
