‘We are a resilient people. Together we will achieve recovery’

-

THE ultimate test of a Community when it is under threat is how it works together to confront and overcome the challenge. Never since Famine times have we in Killarney been so challenged.

Our tourist industry has collapsed and the unemployment level is very high. Many shops have had long closure and a large number of people are enduring financial hardship. The entire Community is now challenged to work in unison to achieve gradual recovery. In every manner possible we must do all what we can as individuals, as families and as a Community to help restore economic and social vibrancy to the area. Firstly, we must ensure that highest standards of behaviour are adhered to in order that the pandemic will not return. We cannot forget social distancing and hand washing. They are regular essentials. We must focus on doing our shopping locally and for a few months at least resist the urge to shop on line. Local is freshest and local is best, should be our motto.

We are a premier tourist destination for two centuries or more. Now we must be our own tourists. Let’s for this year and next forget about foreign places and instead spend locally the few euro that we might have to spare. Write, phone or e-mail our friends and tell them that Killarney is open for business and that they are very welcome. We must ensure that we give the very best value for money.

The beauty of Killarney and its environs is undiminished. Let us enjoy that splendour and invite others to share in its enjoyment. We are a resilient people. Together we will achieve recovery. Ar scáth a chéile a mhairimid.

Cllr Michael Gleeson, Mayor of Killarney
