Traffic congestion is ‘not acceptable’

TRAFFIC congestion caused by ongoing sewerage works in Tralee are unacceptable as the summer tourist season gets into full swing, the President of Tralee Town Council Denis O’Leary, said this week.

Mr O’Leary made his comments in the wake of lengthy traffic delays at two of the town’s most important entry routes at O’Connor’s Terrace, Boherbee and Ballymullen where work on Tralee’s new sewerage system was being carried out.

Speaking to The Kerryman, Mr O’Leary said that Tralee’s business community had with the town council earlier in the year to duscuss the disruption that would be caused as roads were dug up in order to lay new pipes.

“Obviously at this time of year we are concerned about anything that makes it difficult for people to move around town. Any type of congestion is regrettable and if the situation gets any worse we will have to call for another meeting with the Town Council to discuss the matter,” he said.

“I have to say that full marks must be given to the contractors for getting the work in the centre of town completed so quickly in very difficult weather conditions. However, we are concerned that work on the periphery of the town is still ongoing, causing the current problems,” he said.

Tralee Fianna Fail Town Councillor, Johnny Wall, said that Tralee Town Council had discussed the problems caused by sewerage scheme works at a meeting this week. He said Town Engineer, Pat Scanlan, had given assurances that no further work would be carried out on main roads until after the summer.

However, there will be some work in the Mitchels Road to Garryruth area over the next few weeks.
