ONE OF OUR OWN

The death occurred of Mrs Eileen Savaria last week. Eileen, the daughter of Josie and Den Sheehan, had been living in the Indian city of Hyderabad for many decades. In the 1960s, Eileen travelled to London to train as a nurse where she met her husband the Cardiac Surgeon, BG Savaria. In the early 1970s they returned to his home in Hyderabad where he founded a maternity hospital. Eileen and BG visited Brosna on many occasions with their son, Erin, joining them too. Eileen brought her own unique brand of charm to her life so very far removed from her upbringing in Kerry. We send our condolences to her family and friends around the world.

CAMP OBITUARY

The entire community of Camp was deeply saddened at the news of the death of Mike O Neill on Thursday last following a short illness.

Mike was a real tourism ammbassador for West Kerry talking to visitors and promoting the peninsula every day of his life in his pub, The Railway Tavern, Camp. He had a great way with people and he loved meeting people. And the pub was as good as a museum of the Dingle Train with a large collection of Railway artefacts on display.

Mike built up a great Sunday Traditional session in the pub over the years and he played a few tunes himself too. He was very theatrical, a natural on stage with The Camp Drama Group.

Mike loved to travel and every spring took him on a big adventure to faroff lands, where he savoured the cultures and wnjoyed sampling the local cuisines. Above all though Mike was happiest at home, he loved his garden and nature and being outdoorsand he took long mountain walks with his great friend Gordon and dog Jesse, the Dingle Way was a favourite, often finishing in Cloghane, the home of his forefathers where he felt a part of him belonged.

Mike was highly respected in the community and The railway Tavern was headquarters to clubs and organisations from all over the county and he welcomed each and every one of them.So it was no surprise that despite the current Covid-19 restrictions, around 200 people turned out on Monday and took part in a socially distanced guard of honour lining the road as the funeral cortege led by a convoy of VW Cars and Vans conveyed Mike to his final resting place in Camp Cemetary. A beautifully illustrated poster of Mike’s VW car, bearing the caption - One of Camps True Treasures, said it all. Ní bheidh a léithéid arís ann.

The very Rev. Mairt Hanley said the prayers at the graveside followed by a lovely traditional session of music. Mike is survived by his wife Ann, Daughter Tracy, sons, Brian, Darragh and Eoghan, Grandchildren Kaitlyn, Clodagh and Amelia, son in law, Thomas, Darraghs Fiancee, Amy,brother Nicholas and sister- law Rosari, nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends. Sympathy is extended to all.
