Contrary to opinion, this is not the death knell of the American Republic

-

SIR,

Regardless of the riots on display, the looting running amuck and the criminal behaviour of protesters in the streets, the back of America has not been broken – much to the dismay of Trump haters and socialists who want to bury the US Constitution.

The fabric of America has always been subject to change and its present circumstances will be no exception. Anyone who knows the history of America knows this to be true. But what will not change, in fact what will never change, is that America will remain a democracy. It will never be governed by socialists, communists or radical left-wing idealists who believe that anarchy is the easy way out.

People will do well to remember that before the abhorrent example of police brutality in Minneapolis and before the sweep of the COVID-19 pandemic, the unemployment statistic for black Americans was at its lowest point since World War II. There were no protests then and everyone’s breathing was just fine. Then came those series of unfortunate events and the agitators waiting in the wings saw the weakened Achilles’ Heel and brutally cut it open. It was unfair, uncalled for and way over the top.

As it got worse (from both sides), the death knell for the American Republic started ringing. However, it did not ring true for the millions upon millions of Americans who watched the fires burning on television. They did not take to the streets. They watched in horror and knew they were stronger than the destroyers.

They knew they could make the change that worked, not bring in a change that destroys.

They did not care for the slogan ‘Black Lives Matter’ or even the equally altruistic ‘All Lives Matter’. They are both strangely lacking in depth and comprehension.

But they do understand that ‘America Matters’ and nothing and no one will ever crumble it, break it, destroy it or replace it.

‘America Matters’ and that the important thing, Sincerely,

Tom Cahill Ballinskelligs
