BEREAVEMENT

Unfortunately the past few weeks have again been very sad indeed as the community and beyond has unfortunately again witnessed sorrow with the passing of three wonderful and very respected people from our community.

Mary P. Moriarty of Main Street, Ballylongford died unexpectedly but peacefully on Friday May 29th last at Kerry University Hospital Tralee. Mary was born in 1955 and spent most of her life in the Community where she was reared and educated at the local National School, with the exception of spending a short period of years in England in her early adult life. Mary was friends to young and old and maintained that friendship all during her too short a life on this earth. She indeed touched the lives of so many people in many various ways. She spent a good few years working at Jesse James Bar in Asdee where she built up a great friendship with so many people and maintained a great friendship with them up to the time of her passing. But her greatest involvement with people was when she became a Health Care Assistant with the H.S.E. where she and her sister Liz travelled the greater parts of Asdee, Bally,

Moyvane, and Tarbert providing essential care and assistance to so many people that needed their help and assistance. She was a very caring, kind and loving person to the many families that she met and worked with during her career. A marvellous woman who always greeted everybody she met with a smile and friendly salute will be sadly missed by all who knew her. But most of all she will be very deeply regretted by her family and it is to her son Robert Edmonds, daughter-in-law Triona, granddaughter Tamara, grandson Cody, brothers Mossie and Donie, sisters Liz and Nora, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, family relatives, kind and good neighbours and large circle of friends that we extend our deepest sympathies, prayers and thoughts at this sad time. Mary is predeceased by her parents Dan and Nora, her sister Margaret and brother-in-law John.

A private family funeral took place on Monday, 1st June, with Funeral Mass at 2pm in St. Michael the Archangel Church, Ballylongford, followed immediately by Private Cremation at Shannon Crematorium, Shannon Co. Clare. In a wonderful showing of solidarity Mary’s fellow Health Workers, Friends and neighbours lined the street from Funeral home to Church and from Church to edge of Village as her remains made way to Shannon. May She Rest In Peace.

On Saturday evening May 30th the sad and unfortunate news of the passing of James O’Carroll of Asdee East took everybody by shock. Jamison as he was more fondly known was very well known and both he and his family are very highly respected in the community. Originally from Charles Street, in Listowel he enjoyed life with his family in Asdee. But he had strong links with Bally and for years during the early 70’s he had a very successful silver plating business in the loft store at the Bridge, it was from here that he was very successful as his business centred around the coating and polishing of a whole range of products. Following on from that in later years he worked as a Health and Safety Instructor, all of the time coming in contact with numerous people whom he helped, advised and became great friends with. He had a great love of the outdoor life and particularly water sports and was one of the founder members of the Ballylongford Boat Club. Indeed Jimson’s passing has created an huge loss in the lives of everybody that had the pleasure of knowing him, but the deepest loss will be to his beloved wife Chrissie, son Jimmy, daughters Maureen, Siobhan, Sinead and Denise, his cherished grandchildren, brothers and sisters, daughter-in-law and sons-in-law, nieces and nephews and family relatives to whom we extend our deepest sympathies. A private family funeral for Jimson took place on Tuesday, June 2nd, at 12 noon at St. Mary’s Church, Asdee, followed by burial in Aghavallin Cemetery Rusheen. Again a wonderful showing of solidarity was shown by friends and neighbours as they lined the road from his residence to the Church in Asdee and again lined the street from the Church to the edge of the Village and all along the route as his remains made their way to Aghavallin Cemetery. May He Rest In Peace.

Then on Sunday 31st May the sad news filtered through of the sad passing of Anna Dee (Née Kelly) of Carrig Island and late of Carhoonakilla, Tarbert. Anna died peacefully surrounded by her loving family, in the care of the wonderful staff of University Hospital Kerry after a brief illness. Husband of the late Gerard (Jet) she was a very quiet woman who worked extremely hard on the family farm in Carrig Island. She was an extraordinary cook and loved cooking and looking after her family when not helping her husband on the farm. Both Jet and herself witnessed some hard times during those early years in which they, like so many others worked all hours in trying to provide for their family. But they were happy and enjoyed the wonderful family that they were blessed with despite the hard work. In the last few years Anna was a resident in Oaklands Nursing Home where she was very happy and enjoyed the friendships that she made with both fellow residents and staff. Anna’s passing has created a huge void in the lives of her heartbroken family and it is to her loving sons Garrett, Peter and Donie, daughter Mary, brothers Frank, Christopher, Patrick and William, sister Mary, Daughtersin-law Patricia, Maura and Susan, son-in-law Patrick, grandchildren Samantha, Gerard, James, Aoife, Celine and Chloe, sisters-in-law, brother-In-law, nieces, nephews, family relatives and wide circle of friends that we extend our deepest sympathies. A private family funeral for Anna took place on Thursday, June 4th at 1pm in St. Michael the Archangel Church, Ballylongford, followed by burial in Killehenny Cemetery, Ballybunion. Again a wonderful showing of solidarity was shown by friends and neighbours as they lined the road from the Funeral Home to the Church and again lined the Church Car Park as her remains made way to Killehenny Cemetery taking in Carrig Island on route. May She rest In Peace.

AGHAVALLIN CEMETERY CLEAN UP

The Aghavallin Cemetery Committee wishes to thank everybody who took part in the recent Cemetery clean up, which took place over the past number of weeks. Indeed the amount of work done by the volunteers was amazing and their efforts has not gone unnoticed as the Cemetery is looking splendid and the hard work done in restoring its splendour is very much appreciated. However to maintain this splendour and to add more beauty to the Cemetery the committee are rather stretched for funds and would be grateful for any financial assistance or donations which in turn would be put towards its upkeep. Donations can be given to either Michael Foley at 087 9687078 or Caroline O’Connor at 087 9107553. Thank you.

ST JOHN’S CEMETERY

The Cemetery Committee of St John’s in Ballybunion wishes to ask families that have Family plots in the Cemetery if they would oblige in cleaning and maintaining the plots please in order to keep the cemetery in its usual mint condition. The Committee also wishes to inform the public and in particular dog and pet owners that dogs or pets are not allowed in the Cemetery please. Annual Mass: The Annual Mass for all the deceased family members interned in St John’s Cemetery was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Sean Hannifan P.P. on Friday June 5th last the Mass was celebrated in private due to the Cova19 epidemic.

GAA PITCH

Despite the O’Rahilly G.A.A. pitch and walkway being officially closed to the public, it has been brought to our notice that a number of people are entering the ground illegally. This unfortunately is very disappointing practice as it is in breach of Government and G.A.A. guidelines regarding the Covid19 epidemic.

The serious side of this is that (God forbid) should somebody get hurt or injured they would not be covered by Insurance and could in the worst case scenario be prosecuted for unauthorised entry and trespass. It has been brought to notice that a large amount of drink cans etc have been thrown onto the pitch, this is causing a huge problem, as these cans cannot be seen in the grass when it gets long resulting in the cutting machine getting all caught up on these cans causing untold damage.

So could those who are currently engaging in this behaviour please STOP and show respect for a wonderful amenity that has cost so much money, hours of hard work put in by numerous volunteers and members to ensure everybody has an amenity of pride and enjoyment. Surely that is not too much to ask.

MEMORY LANE

Continuing with our look back in time, with our trip down memory’s lane for everybody that can remember the various Businesses that operated in Bally during the 60’s and 70’s. and compare them with present day operations, this week we visit or revisit another one of the four streets and mention the names of the shops and other places of interest etc that were part of everyday life in Bally in those years of nearly half a century ago.

This week we visit Well Street, again a most busy and vibrant area of our village in those years starting at the Corner with Kennelly’s Garage, Collins Creamery, Lizzie Dineen’s Bakery, Denny Dee’s Grocery Shop, Tom & Margaret Keane’s Bar & Snug, Brendan Creedon’s Chemist, Collins Bar & Light Hardware & Weighbridge, Lilly O’Carroll’s Hairdresser, Betts & Paddy Fitzmaurice Grocery Shop, John O’Donovan Shoe Maker, Jack Boyle Carpenter and Cart Maker, The Water Fountain, Paddy Heaphy’s Petrol Pumps, Moss (Bawn) Enright Carpenter, Eamon Dunlea’s Hardware, Bobby Flahive Sand, Blocks & Gravel, Nora Mahony Mobile Food Catering, Johnny Dumford Blacksmith, Daisy & Paddy Mulvihill (Dressmaker & Taylor), Jose Neville (Dress Maker). That was 19 Business outlets in that particular street at that time. Today we have just two business outlets namely Kennelly’s Garage and Kevin Dunlea Floor Coverings that is some change around.

The Final Street next Week, will of course be Main Street. Again sincere thanks for the large amount of messages of response and support for the article for the last few weeks, glad that people enjoyed the going back in time.
