CULCAMP

At a weekend meeting of Mountcollins GAA club a decision was taken to cancel this years GAA Cul Camp. This was taken after consideration with parents with the majority in favour of cancelling the event with the club in total agreement.

GAAPITCH

Our local GAA pitch remains closed for all GAA activities until further notice. Any unauthorised gatherings is forbidden as there has been reports of people from outside the parish using the pitch which is against its guidelines. The walking facilities around the pitch is still open and people are welcome to use this.

CLUBLIMERICKDRAW

The Club Limerick Draw is now up and running with the local club again acting as promoters. The next draw will be held in July and we already had a winner in the June daw. New members are welcome and more information is available from club members.

WEEKLYLOTTO

The Mountcollins/Tournafulla GAA clubs weekly lotto draw is due to commence in July. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic outbreak the draw was cancelled at the start of the year. Any outstanding draws will also be held.

As this is the clubs main source of income we are once again appealing to the people of the parish to support the draw. The cost of inclusion is €100 for the year or just €2 per week. Fully paid up members will have an extra incentive of free club membership, inclusion into draws for Munster and All Ireland tickets as well as a chance to win the weekly jackpot or lucky dip prizes.

Households will receive more information through the post in the coming weeks about the lotto and methods of payment and once again your support is very much appreciated.

DEATHS

The death took place recently of Breda Daly (nee O Donoghue) of Kilsarcon and originally from Goreen, Co. Cork. The late Breda was pre-deceased by her husband Jeremiah, by her sister Mary and by her brother Joseph. The deceased who was 91 was a very lovely, kind and gentle lady who had a great interest in greyhound sport over the years. The late Breda was laid to rest in Kilsarcon Cemetery on Tuesday June 9th. The death took place on Thursday last week of Connie O Mahony of Knockeenahone. The late Connie was involved in farming all his life and was a very popular man in farming circles and in the wider local community. He played football with the Scartaglen Senior team and was a member of the team that officially represented the parish after the club was formed in 1964. He was also involved with Castleisland Coursing Meetings for a long number of years and had a strong affinity with greyhounds on track and field. The deceased was pre-deceased by his daughter Elizabeth and by his brother Pat. He is survived by his wife Mary, by his son Niall, by his daughters Julian, Marie and Aileen and by his sisters Bridget and Julia Mai. The late Connie was laid to rest in Scartaglen Cemetery on Saturday last. May they Rest In Peace.

LOOKINGBACK

Some events and happenings in this locality around this time of year in 1998: Scartaglen N.S. Cumann na mBunscoil girls team won the County Final in Tralee when defeating Moyvane 2-9 to 0-2. The team were captained by Sinead O Driscoll who was presented with the trophy by Chairman of Cumann na mBunscoil, Maurice O Mahony. Scartaglen were trained by Hugh and Teresa O Connor and James O Donoghue. Aileen Coakley and Kathryn Canty were members of the Kerry U14 Ladies team who won the All Ireland Blitz when defeating Meath 2-5 to 1-1 in Mullingar. Councillor Tom Fleming was amongst a group of members from Kerry County Council who visited landfill sites and recycling centres in Holland and Germany and one in Milton Keyes in England. Pat O Sullivan of Gortacoppal and Joan Moynihan of Rathmore were married in Rathmore Church. Sheila Riordan of Ballahantourig scooped the jackpot of €2,300 in Scartaglen GAA Clubs Lotto Draw.

SUMMERSOLSTICE

Sunday next June 21st is the longest day in the year and the date also marks the Summer Solstice. Here in Ireland, we are lucky to be in the position to enjoy long hours of daylight in high summer with darkness only coming in at around 10pm 10.20pm or so on bright summer evenings. So in the year that’s in it, it’s time to enjoy the long bright evenings and appreciate them while we have. of Carhoonakilla, Tarbert. Anna, the oldest of the children of Paddy and Kathleen (née Fitzell) Kelly died on 31st. May last after a long stay in Oaklands Nursing Home, Listowel. She was interred in Lislaughtin Abbey cemetery. She is survived by her sons Garrett, Peter and Donie, daughter Mary, brothers Frank, Christopher, Patrick, William and sister Mary in the UK.

Sympathy is also extended to Siobhán White, Doonard, Tarbert on the recent death of her uncle William O’Flaherty, Athlone, County Westmeath.

CÚRSAÍEAGLAISE

A Covid - 19 Committee has been formed to plan a safe return to church activities for parishioners. The Committee is chaired by Fr Sean Hanafin and members are Joe Coolahan, James Lavery, Paddy Creedon, Mary Holland and Michelle Woods. St Mary’s Church is open daily from 10am to 7pm with health and safety guidelines as detailed at the entrance hallway. It is anticipated that daily Masses will resume in St Mary’s Church from Monday 29 June and further details will be communicated by the committee next week.

The Parish Office will be open from Monday 15 June, opening hours as previously advertised in the newsletter. Please telephone the office at 068 - 36111 to arrange an appointment and avoid un-necessary delays.

SHANNONFERRY

From a social and economic point of view it is good to see business opening up again. The Shannon Car Ferry has benefitted from the uptake. Even though there is no tourist traffic as yet the Ferry is busy with the daily lorry traffic to and from the Kerry Group plant in Listowel. TLI who are working on the line network for the ESB in Clare have about 20 vehicles a day crossing to and from Tarbert on the Shannon Breeze which is currently the only ferry boat in operation. It is likely that local tourist traffic will boost sailings over the coming weeks.

TARBERTTOWNLANDS

As a precursor to a nationwide valuation of buildings and land, the Ordnance Survey was established in 1824. As the names of townlands were rooted in the old Gaelic language, the eminent Gaelic scholar, John O’Donovan was employed to transfer to map English name spellings of the original Gaelic place names. He visited Tarbert in July 1841 when the older ecclesiastical names for the Catholic parishes of Tarbert, Ballylongford and Moyane were Kilnaughtin, Aghavallen and Murhur respectively. The first Ordnance Survey maps were published in 1833 and by 1846 six inch maps of the entire country were on sale. King’s History of Kerry written in 1846 detailed some thirty townlands in Kilnaughtin (Tarbert) parish and I list below suggested origins of the placenames and the area of the townlands. Carhoona (593 acres) - Ceathrúna - the quarter of land. Carhoonakilla (161 acres)- the church quarters. Carhoonakinealy (316 acres) - Kinneally’s quarters. Cockhill (172 acres) - Cnoc an Choiligh -hill of the cock rooster or Cox’s hill after a person who lived there. Coolnanoonagh (178 acres) - Cúl na nIonaidh - corner of the wonders Doonard Lower (166 acres) - Dún Árd - high fort Doonard Upper (401 acres) - as above Dooncaha (1,097 acres) - Dun Catha - fort of the battles.

We will continue this listing next week le cúnamh Dé. our usual cheque presentation to the charities concerned. The donations to each have been posted. Also this year we were crowned All Ireland winners for the best Christmas lights for charity house in Ireland and winning €3000. Many thanks once again to you all for your continued support and generosity.

BRÚSCAR

The recent mowing of the roadside verges along the N21 revealed item of litter which show the utter disregard by some for our environment. For the past five years groups of volunteers, under the direction of the local Tidy Towns, took part in the Good Friday Cleanup. Due to Covid-19 restrictions this was not allowed to go ahead this year and hence the extra rubbish items showing up now when the grass is mown. It appears that items such as paper wrappings, plastic bottles and can etc are too often being cast out the windows of passing vehicles instead of being taken home and being made available for recycling where possible.
