Rheumatology in UHK gets a boost with new ultrasound equipment
THE Kerry Branch of Arthritis Ireland has said that a cutting-edge ultrasound machine has potential to have a major, positive effect on rheumatology treatment at University Hospital Kerry in times ahead.
The branch welcomed news this week that a P9 Ultrasound Machine delivered to UHK will now be available to help patients with arthritis or related conditions, having not been in operation after its delivery due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The imaging tool helps rheumatologists acquire crucial information to help find the cause of many joint problems, and gives detailed real-time images to help deliver quick diagnoses and guide treatment decisions. It has earned the nickname ‘ The Rheumatologist’s Stethoscope’ amongst some professionals.
“This will have major benefits for all patients presenting with arthritis and other related conditions attending UHK,” KBAI Chairperson Tom Barrett said.
“This machine should make early diagnosis of rheumatic conditions easier, which will result in proper treatment starting sooner, as early as first consultation.”
