Over 1,000 new Kerry C-19 cases last week

OVER 1,000 new cases of Covid-19 have been diagnosed in Kerry in the last week bringing the total number of cases in the county to 3,303 since the outbreak began.

According to the most recent figures from the HSE (as The Kerryman went to press) 1,046 new cases were diagnosed in Kerry between January 4 and 10 with the highest daily figure coming last Thursday, January 7 when 262 new cases in Kerry were announced.

Figures for Kerry’s six local electoral areas – for the two weeks from December 22 to January 4 – show case numbers are on the rise across the county.

In the Tralee Local Electoral Area an increase of 224 cases brought the local incidence rate per 100,000 people to 678. The rate in Killarney is 712 per 100,00 after an increase of 211.

In the Castleisla­nd LEA a jump of 92 cases brought the local rate to 536. In Dingle the rate is 528 per 100,000 after a case rise of 75.

The Listowel LEA is the least affected area of the county with an increase of 89 case bringing the th local rate to 310, the lowest in the county by a considerab­le margin. m

In the Kenmare LEA – which encompasse­s en most of the Iveragh ag peninsula and recently had the th highest rate in Munster – case ca continue to increase but the th rate of infection is beginning n to fall.

An increase of 152 case in the th area brought the rate in Kenmare to 606, down from 670 a week earlier.

Nationally the average rate per 100,000 as of January 4 stoodt at 674 which both Killarney n and Tralee exceed.
