Treasured memories in a bottle
YOU may remember last October, we covered the story of a message in a bottle that was discovered on Barrow Beach by Maeve Ferris and her partner Jason Phelan.
The message in the bottle had been thrown into the ocean from the boat of Barbara and Curt Scott - who were married for 46 years and lived on the Virgin Islands for 15 years - as they headed to the Bahamas in May 2013; well we got in touch with Barbara last year to let her know that her message had been found, something which unbeknownst to us at the time, brought back special memories for Barbara.
She informed us that her husband, Curt, had passed away in 2015, just two years after they had thrown the message in the bottle into the ocean.
She said though, that hearing that the message had been found brought her right back to those carefree days that she spent with Curt on that boat together.
“It brought tears to my eyes. My husband passed away in 2015. The sea was his passion and he loved sending out hundreds of message bottles,” said Barbara in a message to The Kerryman.
“We had replies from all over the world and even an interview on an Australian radio station. I sold the boat, the ‘Scott-free V’ soon after Curt died and I miss being at sea every day. This has brought back so many wonderful memories,” she said.
“Each time a bottle is found, I am flooded with special memories of our life together. It is a wonderful way of keeping his memory living on,” she finished.
