- By STEPHEN FERNANE

WHILE it’s true that no man is an island, it doesn’t mean you can’t dream about owning one. At least that will be the plan for whoever it is decides to fork out a cool €1.25 million for Madam’s Island, nestled in the tranquil surrounds of Caragh Lake.

The lucky new owner is sure to bring social distancing to a whole other level as this resort combines privacy and isolation with still waters and surrounding mountain views.

The accommodation isn’t bad either comprising of two stone lodges providing some 3,500 square feet in living accommodation.

The living quarters - called ‘Salmon Lodge’ and ‘Acorn Lodge’ - provide four living rooms, six bedrooms and six bathrooms. The island is currently owned by Americans with ‘strong Irish connections’, who enjoy holidaying in mid Kerry.

Madam’s Island is accessed across a long stone bridge. In terms of size, the resort extends to some 2.9 acres. Caragh Lakes’ waters form part of a Special Area of Conservation.

The property is up for sale with Sothbey’s Ireland, who, in spite of the island’s natural beauty, don’t hold back in describing the terrain and all that this part of the Kingdom is renowned for. The brochure says: ‘Ireland enjoys very long hours of daylight in the summer months, extending up to circa 17 hours during July.’

David Ashmore, of Sothbey’s Ireland, said it can be considered a unique site within Kerry, nationally and internationally. He also described it as the ‘golden nugget’ of properties that is attracting strong interest since coming on the market in December.

“This property is attractive to us in Ireland, but it is also the kind of property that truly appeals internationally,” said David.
