Listry GAA remember historic 1970 Cup success
LISTRY GAA club has compiled a commemorative booklet that will take club members - and others further afield - on a trip down memory lane as it reflects on the club’s historic O’Donoghue Cup (East Kerry SFC) title win of 1970.
Marking the 50th anniversary of that famous day, the club - and a hard-working committee therein - have produced the 40-page publication that takes a holistic and personal look back on that famous August day half a century ago when the Listry senior footballers of 1970 became king of East Kerry
They were, and remain, the first and only team in the club’s long history to win the O’Donoghue Cup (East Kerry Championship). An achievement that has not been matched to this day by another Listry team, that 1970 Championship, the final win over Spa, and the aftermath is fondly remembered by the people of the parish.
The booklet gathers memories and newspaper archives from that famous year and puts them together alongside player profiles and accounts of life in the parish at the time.
It was an exciting year for the parish, a new church had just been built at Listry cross, the club was working on purchasing its own field at Faha cross, the mart in Milltown was expanding to meet the demands of a vibrant and flourishing farming community and parish was thriving with life.
The club hopes this commemorative programme will give those who were there on that momentous day 50 years ago a worthwhile trip down memory lane. It is also hoped that this new record of that day will give younger people in Listry a greater understanding of what an occasion that 1970 success was and, perhaps, inspire current and future footballers to their own notable achievements on the playing pitch.
Listry GAA had originally planned to have a gathering to mark the launch formally but the current Covid situation doesn’t allow for that.
The special commemorative publication can be got at Michael O’ Sullivan’s shop at Beaufort Bridge or from Paul Kennedy by email listry1970@gmail.com
