BEREAVEMENT

The Community was once again plunged into deep sadness on Friday morning last with the shocking news of the sudden and unexpected passing of a very bright and caring young woman Brenda Dineen R.I.P of Lenamore, Ballylongford. A young and vibrant woman in her mid 20’s she was the dearest and very much treasured and loved daughter of Donal and Carmel Dineen and a loving and wonderful sister to Brian. Her unfortunate passing at such a young age has indeed left a very eerie cloud over the whole Parish and far beyond and more sadly creating a huge void in the lives of her family that sadly will never be filled. Born and reared in the townland of Lenamore where she enjoyed life starting with her schooling at the local National School before moving on to her Secondary education at Tarbert Comprehensive and then on to college where she studied and qualified as a Primary Teacher. She loved the Irish language and everything about Irish culture and right up to her sad passing she had been the most popular teacher at Gaelscoil Lios Tuathail.

While she was a very bright and very vibrant teacher, her love of sport particularly Basketball was always close to her heart and from her childhood years and into her teen years Brenda proved to be an extremely skilful basketball player, a great defender, but well able to take her scores in attack.

She was a part of many winning Naomh Laichtin Primary School teams. She accelerated in the sport and in her first year in Tarbert Comprehensive School she was a member of the School’s Minor Team which was captained by Ciara Trant of Glin. The team brought five All-Ireland medals to Lenamore from finals held in Rochfordbridge in Westmeath. In the Basketball Ireland report on the game Brenda was lauded for her play against Fál Carrach from Donegal in the All-Ireland semi Final, capping her display by scoring four from four from the free throw line in the last two minutes of the game to bring Tarbert home by a single point. Brenda went on to win other County titles with Tarbert and blitz medals with Naomh Laichtin. She played in three All-Ireland semi finals at various grades, but unfortunately never succeeded in winning that second All Ireland medal.

On reading the Condolence Notes, left on the deaths RIP website one can very clearly see the immense popularity and the lovely person that everybody held Brenda in. Indeed she had a wonderful life to still live but how sad that she has been taken from our midst far too soon. It is at this heartbreaking time that we offer our deepest sympathies to her parents Carmel and Donal, her brother Brian and her aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbours and her close circle of friends. May the light of Heaven guide her to her heavenly home and may she Rest In Peace. Brenda’s cortege arrived at St Michael the Archangel Church, Ballylongford on Monday morning last January 11th for 11am Requiem Mass, Funeral immediately afterwards to Relig Mhichil Cemetery Old School Road, Ballylongford. Deepest Sympathy is also extended to Tony Byrne and his wife Fiona (Née Lanigan) Well

Street, on the sad passing of Tony’s mother Angela Byrne of Reiska, Kilcommon, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, who passed peacefully in the loving care of The Dean Maxwell Community Nursing Home, Roscrea, on Monday Jan 4th last. Ar dheis dea go raibh a ainm.

Deepest sympathy is also extended to Mary O’Sullivan of Rushy Park, Ballylongford on the sad passing of her brother Patsy O’Sullivan, Oakdene, Cahirdown, Listowel. Patsy died peacefully, on January 8th, 2021. A private family funeral took place for Patsy, on Monday morning last with the Requiem Mass celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Listowel, at 11.30 am, followed by Interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Listowel. NOTLETTINGDOWN TRADITION

On a lighter note speaking with Wrenboy supreme Michael Horgan this week he reliably informed me that he had recently continued in the ancient tradition of going on the Wren on St Stephen’s Day despite the Covid 19 virus and restrictions. “Tradition he stated could not be broken and had to be kept going”. Not alone that but he also intends to go on the Biddy on February 1st
