The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
No winning end for Kerry in Class 3 badminton series
IT was not to be for the Kerry class 3 badminton team at Limerick last Sunday where the Kingdom took on Wexford and Sligo in the All-ireland Class 3 Inter-county series.
First up Kerry played the Slaneysiders and Wexford took the laurels 5-4. The Kerry winners were Mary Falvey and Ciara O’connor at second ladies; Billy Lacey and Eric Nelligan at first mens; Mary Falvey and Eric Nelligan at first mixed and Ciara O’connor with Colm Kelly at second mixed.
After another close encounter with Sligo Kerry again lost 5-4. The Kingdom’s winners were at second ladies again where Mary Falvey and Ciara O’connor kept their unbeaten record.
Kerry made a clean sweep of the three mixed ties to bring their tally to four matches won; Eric Nelligan and Mary Falvey at first mixed; Colm Kelly and Ciara O’connor at second mixed and Gio Gaudino and Helen Twomey at third mixed.
The ladies singles tie saw Edel Broderick put in a brave performance to snatch a Kerry victory but she went so close before losing out in a close three set encounter.
The Kerry squad was Mary Falvey, Helen Twomey, Eileen O’connor, Ciara O’connor, Edel Broderick, Billy Lacey, Eric Nelligan, Colm Kelly, Sean Murphy, Gio Gaudino and Michael Crossan.
County Club Paddy Sugrue

One hundred plus competitors gathered at the Tralee Sports Centre last Sunday for the annual Paddy Sugrue memorial tournaments sponsored by Gala, Mounthawk, and credit to the County Club committee for catering for such a large volume of players which included all Kerry divisions from 2 to 5.

Division 2: Catherine Murphy (Kingdom) & Anish Varghuise (County) beat Linda Mccarthy (County) & John O'brien (Killarney) 21-13, 21-17. Division 3: Kathleen Gilbride (Ballyheigue) & Don Ring (County) defeated Elaine Hudson (Moyvane) & Patrick Corridan (Listowel) 2113, 23-21. Division 4: Maeve Twomey (Killarney) & Ger O'connor (Sneem/iveragh) beat Grace Stack (County) & Padraig Mccarthy (Killarney) 2117, 21-13. Division 5: Moyvane's Suzanne Keane & Michael O'connor (Kingdom) beat Marie O'connor (Killarney) & Oliver Carmody (Moyvane) 21-13, 21-13.
Juvenile championships
The Kerry juvenile County mixed doubles championships took place in Killarney on Saturday last with over 80 participants. 14, 21-9 U17 Marie O’connell (Kingdom) & Peter Mcgovern (Annascaul) beat Niamh O’connor (County, Tralee) & Dylan Bourke (Moyvane) 21-15, 10-21, 21-7 Plate U11 Winners: Soiba Hannifin (Annascaul) & Luke Mcloughlin (Kingdom) U13 Winners: Jessica Galvin (Killarney) & Kieran O’connor (Annascaul) U15 Winners: Claire Cahill (Kingdom) & Brendan Mcgovern (Annascaul)

Championships
Friday next sees the first of this years doubles championships take place, with the Division 1&3 Aceit Leak Repairs sponsored Ladies and Mens Doubles Championships in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre at 7.45pm. All entries to Peggy Horan before Wednesday.
Sunday sees the Division 5 Aceit Leak Repairs Ladies & Mens Doubles at the Castleisland Community Centre at 3pm. All entries to Peggy Horan before this Thursday.
Brewster Cup
Inter-county competition returns to the Killarney sports centre this Sunday where the annual Munster Brewster Cup takes place, where it will be ran by the Tipperary Branch.
Kerry’s last win in this prestigious competition, which commenced in 1951, was in 2003 and the Kingdom mentors are hoping that this year’s squad will bring this cup back to Kerry.

The Munster under-11 and under-15 badminton championships take place in Limerick’s UL sports arena this Saturday with a sizeable Kerry entry taking part. Best wishes extended to all the Kingdom players.
