June 1991
AS NEARLY 2,000 students in Kerry begin exams this week, principals around the county have welcomed the favourable weather conditions that are due to last for the week ahead.
Wednesday morning saw the start of the exams and, a break in the sunny weather which Kerry has been experiencing for the past two weeks. Principal of Listowel Community College, Patrick O’Sullivan, told’ The Kerryman that although the dull weather can be tiresome on some people, it is perfect for exams.
“If the weather was sunny and warm, it would not oe helpful to those indoors sitting exams,” he said.
He has 27 students sitting the Leaving Certificate, 50 sitting the Intermediate Certificate and 20 sitting the Senior Certificate exams. He said when the students started to arrive at the school on Wednesday morning, they were slightly nervous, but said this was to be expected.
Tarbert Comprehensive College had 130 students sitting the Leaving and 131 sitting the Inter.
Principal Tomas Mac Eoin said: “A mass was said in the school before the exams started. This had a calming effect on the students as had the break in the weather. If we had weather like what we have been having for the past fortnight, it would have been very taxing on the Students,” he said.
The first exam on the timetable for students sitting both Intermediate and Leaving Certificate examinations was English paper one.
Principal of St. Brendan’s College in Killarney, Fr Dan O’Riordan told The Kerryman that all his students were very happy with the paper.
Colaiste Ide in Dingle has 20 students sitting the Leaving and 34 sitting the Inter. Principal Sr. Baiste said the students were very “cool, calm and collected before they went in for their first exam. She praised the weather conditions but said the temperature was a bit low for students’ comfort.
