Scoil Saidhbhín is a glorious success as first year draws to a close
THERE was great excitement in Scoil Saidhbhín last week at the official opening of the new south Kerry primary school.
Situated at the heart of Cahersiveen town, the new formation allowed for the amalgamation of the former Scoil Mhuire na mBráithre and Saint Joseph’s Convent Primary School.
The school held a special mass ceremony, aptly called ‘Le Chéile’, on Thursday last to celebrate the opening of the school a year ago with Chairperson of the Parent’s Association, Olivia Goggin opening the momentous evening with a poem to mark the special occasion.
Sixth class student, Ellie O Connell, presented her friends and teachers with a moving poem called ‘This is Our School’ before Secretary, Kitty O Shea and Caretaker, Flor O Leary were given the honour of officially opening Scoil Saidhbhín.
In her address, Principal Mary Sugrue commended both Ms O Shea and Mr O Leary for their contribution claiming them to be instrumental in the huge transition.
As the ribbon was cut and the school was officially declared open, all present sang out the sweet air of the Boys of Barr na Sráide, a fitting song to draw proceedings and a successful first year to a close.
School work was well and truly out on Thursday as students, younger siblings, parents and visitors enjoyed their children’s party and an afternoon of fun drumming and Zumba in the playground with instructors from Keel based company Drum Dance Ireland.
Having only received official notice of the amalgamation and appointment of Interim Manager, Anne Fay, in May 2015, the school has since developed a happy atmosphere and endless possibilities with exciting positive changes on the horizon for the children, staff, parents and community, according to Ms Sugrue.
Ms Sugrue thanked students, parents, Board of Management members and all members of the community who helped the school in any way with its new venture.
