THE early hours of Monday morning saw the transformation of Killarney into a red-blooded, star spangled, wild-west style town as July 4 celebrations got underway for the third year running.
Streets were lined with the famous stars and stripes flag as new Killarney Municipal District Mayor Brendan Cronin and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President Kate O’Leary hoisted the colours on the town hall on Main Street, accompanied by a wonderful rendition of the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ from a number of local choirs.
Later in the day the fun antics of the troublesome gun-toting wild-west cowboys and their shoot em up’s in the town centre entertained young and old, while the live brass bands added to the sense of occasion throughout the day.
The sizzling smell of the charity barbecue in aid of the Kerry–Cork Health Link Bus that took place at Scott’s Hotel was no doubt still lingering in the air as hundreds of people lined the streets for the start of the Big Parade later that evening; an event that saw floats, flags and all sorts of wonderful characters – including Disney favourites – march through the streets.
The evening was then topped off by an open air cinema screening of ‘Top Gun’ at Killarney House & Gardens before a colourful fireworks display capped off another American Independence Day.
