The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)

The aftershock of events that shaped the nation

-

THE devestating impact that the Easter Rising had on families around the country was outlined in stark terms this week 100 years ago in a letter appealing for aid, which was published in The Kerryman.

The letter from the Irish Volunteers Dependents Fund, composed of the bereaved wives, mothers and sisters of Volunteers who died in the Rebellion, were appealing to Nationalists to form branches to raise money to help the many helpless victims which the Rising had created. In a subsequent edition of The Kerryman a front page article described the fundraising effort as commendable.

Meanwhile, Dr Conor Brosnan of the Dingle Historical Society has unearthed a list of the Volunteers from West Kerry who mobilised and marched to Tralee in preparation for the Easter Rising.
