The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)

Fossa and Na Gaeil only two teams with perfect record

-

NEITHER of the top two appear to be letting up in their drive for promotion as the only 100% records left in the competition are in this Division now with Fossa and Na Gaeil’s seventh successive victories in their campaigns.

Fossa won an East Kerry derby with Dr Crokes B by 3-13 to 0-10, but it was a tight affair for Na Gaeil in keeping their perfect record intact. They needed two late points away to Moyvane from Mikey Griffin to overcome the home side at Con Brosnan Park by 0-14 to 0-13. The visitors made the ideal start in scoring the first five points of the game but Moyvane reeled them back to within a point at the break, Na Gaeil’s lead 0-9 to 0-8.

A combination of Seamie O’Neill and Griffin brought the advantage back out to three for the visitors however Martin Stack was keeping Moyvane in it on the scoreboard so much so that points from himself and Timmy Noonan put their side ahead for the first time with the game approaching the 60 minute mark. Griffin held his nerve in putting over the final two points of proceedings to give Na Gaeil victory by the narrowest of margins.

Both Fossa and Na Gaeil have four points to spare over their nearest challengers at present in Ballymacelligott although Firies have the opportunity to reduce that deficit to three should they defeat Moyvane in a back game this weekend.

Ballymac had four points to spare over Renard at home in their game this weekend with a 0-15 to 0-11 success but Firies gave another South Kerry side a trimming in the form of a 19-point victory over Valentia in Farranfore.

Mike Daly, Josh Flynn and William Courtney impressed for Firies in a 4-19 to 0-12 win over the Young Islanders for whom John Shanahan and Andy Quigley impressed on a torrid evening on the scoreboard.

Skellig Rangers moved into position for a promotion push with a 1-16 to 0-8 victory away to Churchill. A crucial period that yielded 1-3 for the visitors to one point for the hosts was a key factor in their win, Diarmuid Keating getting 1-2 of this total for the Portmagee side. They led by 1-8 to 0-4 at half-time as Churchill only managed points from Jack O’Connell, Pa McCarthy, Mike and Oisin O’Brien in the second period. Michael and Brendan O’Sullivan along with Ciaran Keating pointed the South Kerry side onto their eventual 11 point win.

The other game played saw Lispole pick up a big win over Scartaglin in the relegation battle, moving out of the relegation zone and level on points with the East Kerry side on three points. Two goals from Declan O’Sullivan gave Lispole a 2-5 to 1-4 advantage at the break and they managed another two goals in the second period to complete a comprehensive 4-12 to 1-7 victory with Scartaglin missing twice from the penalty spot during proceedings. Scart certainly need to do a lot better in their back game with Skellig Rangers at home this weekend before they head down south themselves in the next round to take on Renard.

The outcome of the Moyvane versus Firies game will be crucial to the the meeting of the East Kerry side and Na Gaeil in Round Seven.

Fossa host Churchill in the next round while Ballymac make the trip off the mainland to take on Valentia. Lispole host Dr Crokes B in their next match while following their respective back games this weekend, Skellig Rangers will play host to Moyvane in two weeks time.
