The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Double bills for round 3
THE Garveys Supervalu County SFC returns to centre stage this weekend with two double bills of Round 3 games down for decision on Saturday and Sunday.
All teams in Round 3 have of course tasted defeat in earlier rounds of the competition and they are thus availing of the second chance for redemption to reach the quarter finals where Dr Crokes, Kenmare District, Mid Kerry and champions, South Kerry await in the other side of the draw.
Dingle and Milltown-Castlemaine get proceedings underway in the first of the double bills in Austin Stack park on Saturday afternoon (5pm). Dingle defeated Rathmore in Round 1 but then surrendered a winning lead against Mid Kerry in Round 2. Their opponents were heavily defeated by Legion in Round 1 but then fought back to surprise East Kerry in Round 2.
The second game on the bill is the meeting of Austin Stacks and West Kerry at 6:45pm. Stacks defeated East Kerry in their opening game but then went down to South Kerry after a replay in Connolly Park having been unlucky not to emerge victorious in the drawn encounter in Cahersiveen. West Kerry took a severe beating at the hands of Dr Crokes in their opener but recovered to defeat Kilcummin by five points in Round 2.
On Sunday, the action moves to Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium. St Kierans and Rathmore get underway at 2pm. St Kierans defeated Feale Rangers in Round 1 and acquitted themselves very well in Round 2 when pushing Dr Crokes all the way before losing out by the minimum margin. Rathmore were disappointed to lose their opening game on home soil to Dingle by five points but they recovered well to defeat St Brendans in Round 2.
The second game in the stadium at 3:30 is one of the most interesting of the weekend when club sides Legion and Kerins O’Rahillys go head to head. Legion had a big win over Milltown-Castlemaine in Round 1 before going under to Kenmare District by five points in Round 2.
The availability of James O’Donoghue will be a huge bonus to the Killarney side this time round. O’Rahillys put up a great performance in their opening game before going down to champions South Kerry by a point in Austin Stack Park and they then disposed of Feale Rangers in Round 2.
To date the championship has been interesting at the very least and that fact was proven with an increase in attendances, especially for the Round 2 games. Let’s hope that this weekend’s games will provide further entertainment and good value for spectators.
