CASTLEISLAND’S SHANE SIGNS UP FOR IPSWICH

- By AMY REIDY

IT’S safe to assume that the mentioning of a certain sportsman by the name of Shane McLoughlin would have been greeted with a familiar nod by Castleisland locals over the years. Now, thanks to a professional contract with one of England’s top clubs, Shane’s name has just become a lot more famous.

The soccer star has placed his hometown on the map and last week signed a professional contract with Ipswich Town FC – nicknames the Tractor Boys – following an impressive season with the club in the FA Cup competition.

McLoughlin, whose budding career kicked off with Castleisland AFC at the age of seven, had an undeniable talent and was something of a prodigy, according to former coach Georgie O Callaghan.

“Since Shane first stepped on a pitch, he had it in him. He was terrific all the way up along the ranks and could easily take on players who were three or four years older than him,” said Mr O Callaghan.

McLoughlin penned the coveted contract for one year after a two year scholarship with the club and could have the option of a further 12 month stay.

With an exceptional attitude on and off the pitch, the future is looking brighter than ever for the rising star.

“He was always a pleasure to train and has a really driven personality on the field and off. He has exceptional discipline and is a great example for our younger players. We are absolutely delighted for Shane and wish him all the best in the future,” added Mr O’Callaghan.

Currently under the guidance of former Ireland manager, Mick McCarthy, the 19-yearold can play up front or on the wings and has earned his place on the first team.

Other familiar names that are peaking in their chosen sport thanks to the nurturing of Georgie O Callaghan include Knocknagoshel’s Joseph Regan who has played for Ireland and Coventry City; Colm Murphy who is currently signed with Limerick City in the Eircom League and Seán Brosnan who has also represented Ireland at underage level.

Meanwhile, John Egan, son of former Kerry great, John Egan, Snr, has signed for English Championship side, Brentford. The 23 year-old centre-back has joined the Griffin Park outfit on a three-year deal having spent the past two seasons with League One side, Gillingham.
