Glenbeigh/Glencar still showing hunger for JFC title

-

ALTHOUGH the name of the competition might be slightly different, the cup Glenbeigh / Glencar are craving is still the same, the Con Brosnan Cup.

They managed to make the semi-finals for the sixth consecutive year with a 21-point rout of the side who beat them in the first of those semi-final appearances back in 2011, Dromid Pearses, down in South Kerry on Sunday.

Both sides have been runners-up in the event in the last three stagings, but anyone expecting a cracking contest was left sorely disappointed with the outcome of the match. Chris Farley scored the opening point of proceedings for the hosts but a Niall O’Shea effort was their only other score in the first period as Glenbeigh dominated for pretty much from start to finish.

Darran O’Sullivan, Jack Brosnan and Stephen O’Sullivan were amongst their first-half scores at they took a 0-10 to 0-2 lead at the break with Colin McGuillicuddy and Brosnan impressive at midfield as their full-back line of Sean Roche, Jeremiah Hoare and Kieran Doyle was equally impressive throughout in restricting Dromid to only four points in proceedings.

Although Tommy Cahill had a goal ruled out for a square ball, the Mid Kerry side weren’t long finding the net afterwards as Gavan O’Grady set up Daniel Griffin for two goals in the space of five minutes.

Dromid’s day got worse in the poor conditions when Sean O’Shea was sent off and Dominic O’Sullivan had to off injured in what was a very threadbare panel of only 18 players for the hosts.

Danny O’Sullivan pitched in with 1-2 before the final whistle to increase the visitors winning margin at the end as they will face Ballydonoghue in the semi-finals come the autumn.

Expectations will be high but the Division 1 side will know not to underestimate their Division 3 opponents with the way recent campaigns have ended in heartbreak for them in this competition.
