Hitting the ‘Reel’ note with the talented Mulcahy family

‘IT runs in the family’, is certainly an appropriate phrase to use in relation to this talented trio of Abbeyfeale musicians.

The supremely talented Mick Mulcahy and daughters, Louise and Michelle have just released their latest rousing collection, which features 14 tracks ranging from reels and gigs to hornpipes. Entitled The Reel Note, the CD has been described by fellow musician, Mick O’Connor as “first class, no gimmicks, syncopations or other distractions, just extremely good music played by exceptionally talented musicians”.

Mick’s 7 th such production, the CD was launched at the recent Willie Clancy festival in Clare - a mecca for Irish music lovers. Between them, there are few instruments that the Mulcahys don’t play. That versatility and comfort in playing instruments ranging from accordion and concertina, to the fiddle, flute and Uilleann pipes has resulted in the group being held in extremely high regard among the musical fraternity.

It was the constant exposure to Irish music within the family home that served as the catalyst for both Michelle and Louise subsequently developing a strong grá for the art that has enabled them to see the world while entertaining crowds - as a family. America is a regular destination of choice for the group, who have mesmerised audiences as far afield as Australia and New Zeland. Currently touring in the USA, Louise and Michelle will once again join forces with their father and mentor next month for upcoming dates in Camden town, London. Playing in London brings with it a strong sense of nostalgia for Mick, who spent much time there in the 1960’s. It was there he first met many of the musicians with whom he maintains strong ties today. Given what he has achieved in the world of music over the years, Mick Mulcahy, is far from a regular musician. According to the similarly talented, Mick O’Connor, it is Mick’s “great interest in unusual tunes and settings combined with a passion and love for traditional Irish music”, that sets him apart from the ordinary.
