The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)

Double date for Kerry teams

- County Board PRO John O’Leary with all the GAA news

THE Kerry Senior and Minor football teams will be doubly engaged in All Ireland Quarter finals in Croke Park on Sunday July 31.

Provincial winners, both Kerry and Galway, both of whom will be part of a treble bill at HQ on that day, still await their opponents in the Senior quarter-finals. Kerry and Galway will be paired against the winners of the final two games in Round 4A of the Qualifiers. Those games go ahead this Saturday as follows: Clare V Roscommon in Pearse Stadium, Galway at 3pm & Derry V Tipperary in Breffni Park at 5pm.

Preconditions for the Quarter Final Draws are as follows: Neither Kerry nor Galway can meet their Provincial Final opponents & Repeat games are to be avoided where possible.

All of that means that Kerry’s opponents are limited to Roscommon, Derry and Clare (in the event that Tipperary and Clare both advance).

It is good to see that Croke Park are able to accommodate some of the Minor quarter-final games this year and Kerry Minors will put their All Ireland title on the line when they meet Ulster final runners-up Derry at 12 noon on Sunday week.

The good news for Kerry followers wishing to take a weekend break in the capital on the Bank Holiday weekend is that there is a very attractive qualifier fixture on the Saturday involving Donegal and Cork, who with Mayo and Westmeath will be fighting it out to meet provincial winners Dublin and Tyrone on August 6.

Acorn Life Under 21 FC

ON a night borrowed from winter, a physically stronger Dingle outfit overcame a youthful Dr Crokes fifteen to advance to the Acorn Life Under 21 Championship final at Strand Road on Thursday evening of last week on a 1-12 to 0-5 scoreline.

The winners, with wind advantage, got into their stride right from the throw-in, were seven points to the good at half time, and once they got the only goal of the game soon after the restart courtesy of their top scorer Cathal Bambury, there was only going to be one winner.

Dingle, with a side built on the successful minor county title winning sides of the past two years have a strong outfit with players such as Barry O’Sullivan, the two Tom O’Sullivans, Mark O’Connor , Conor Geaney and Cathal Bambury, to name but a few, available to them.

Their opponents in the final will be either St Kierans or Kenmare District who meet in the other semi final on Wednesday, July 27 next in Killorglin at 7pm. St Kierans defeated Kenmare District by 1-17 to 2-9 in a delayed Round 2 game on Thursday last.
