No Joy for Kerry team in Douglas

-

BOTH of Kerry’s representatives in the Munster semi-finals and finals of the Jimmy Bruen and Pierce Purcell Shields were defeated on Sunday in Douglas at the semi-final stage as Killarney went down to Muskerry by the odd match in five in the Jimmy Bruen Shield while Ring of were beaten by Thurles in the Pierce Purcell.

Killarney looked set for victory at one stage against Muskerry and were only denied by the slightest of margins as Dermot Roche and Niall McCarthy won the top match 2 & 1 and Tomás Kelliher and Ryan Kelliher took the fifth match 4 & 3.

Darren Mulcahy and Peter McEnery went down 3 & 2 in the second match and Luke Walsh and Robert Cussen lost the third match by 2 & 1 to tie the game at two apiece but sadly Enda Curtayne and Michael Maher were agonisingly beaten on the 21st in a game that could have gone either way.

In the Pierce Purcell Shield Ring of Kerry lost the opening two games as Mattie Twomey and Billy Farrell were beaten at the nineteenth and Paudie Corkery and Daniel Daly were beaten by two holes.

John O’Keeffe and Donal Murphy offered the South Kerry club a lifeline, winning the third match 2 & 1 but Thurles sealed victory taking the fourth game from Dermot Murphy and John Kearney by2&1.

The final game involving Ring of Kerry’s John Nyhan and Pat O’Dwyer was declared a half.

Thurles went on to lose the final in the afternoon to fellow Tipperary side Nenagh while Muskerry went on to win the Jimmy Bruen Shield beating Spanish Point in the final.
