The launch of the tournament in Riordan’s Bar in Abbeyfeale was attended by Club Captain John Manton, Lady Captain Marian O’Connor, Lady President Maria O’Connor, representatives of golf societies in Kerry and Limerick, while the Fitzgerald family of the Woodlands House Hotel & Spa were represented by Mary, Conor and Richard.
Dick Fitzgerald was born in1944 in Laccabawn, Castleisland overlooking the golf course. He moved to Adare in the late 60s, but never forgot his roots in Castleisland or his passion for Kerry football. He always enjoyed the Kerry teams calling into the Woodlands on their journeys up and down the country.
Fitzgerald was also a proud Limerick supporter especially when his son Conor represented Limerick in senior football and hurling. His love of horse racing was evident by the number of horses the family owned over the years, including Lord Adare.
Mary Fitzgerald said the family were delighted to be asked to sponsor this tournament in honour of her late husband and told how Dick and herself started out on a journey in the 1980s with a four-bed guest house and gradually building it up over the years to a thriving hotel.
