Three brothers, two instruments apiece and one All-Ireland Fleadh: Mackessys lead Kerry hopes

- By DÓNAL NOLAN

THREE serious musical talents from Listowel face into Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Ennis at the weekend with something of an All-Ireland distinction already in the bag: three brothers - yes, all from the one family - contesting not one but two different solo musical categories each.

The achievement of Neilus (17), Darragh (15) and Kieran (12) Mackessy of Coolagown, Killocrim, in qualifying from two musical categories each from their provincial finals is believed to be unique in the country. They head to Ennis this weekend representing the county alongside over 80 other talents in a massive showing for the Kingdom in 2016.

“We’re so proud of them and whatever happens we’re just delighted they got this far,” mom Verona told The Kerryman.

Neilus will contest the under-18 solo button accordion and melodeon competitions; Darragh the under-15 solo banjo and mandolin and Kieran the under-12 button accordion and melodeon.

Playing with Ballydonoghue/Lisselton Comhaltas, the Mackessy brothers’ talents were honed by teachers TP McNamara - in the accordion - and Danielle O’Riordan in the banjo and mandolin.

It must be one mighty house for the music 24/7? “The beauty of it is that one might start playing in the sitting room - now known as the music room - and another might join in and before you know it all three are playing a great seisiún!” Verona laughed. Dad Connie’s father, Con Snr, is another hugely proud member of the family at present. “They obviously have a great natural affinity for music, but it’s in the blood too having originated with Con Snr, a great accordion player who’s very proud of them.”

Kerry Comhaltas PRO John Stack has meanwhile wished all Kerry competitors a big ‘beir bua’ as the Kingdom crosses the Estuary for trad glory this weekend.
